XS BIG dots questions

Hello,
So a while back I picked up a p226 with XS bit dots installed. I gave them a year and ultimately decided I'm not a fan, but I do love how big the front sight is. So my question is, does anyone know if a regular styled (the two dots) #8 rear siglite(or mepro, etc) would work?

Thanks in advance!

PS - I also posted this under the gunsmithing section, wasn't sure where was correct. feel free to delete whichever....

Disagree.

Big dots are designed for quick target acquisition during stressful situations. They're wonderful sights for defense. Considering that most SD situations occur at 7-10 yards, the XS BIG dot sights will be effective.

For target shooting, they suck. But then again, bar-dots aren't the best choice for target shooting anyways.

That said (in response to BPman), chances are EXTREMELY thin that a self defense situation will occur where long range accuracy is required. If you shoot someone in "self defense" at 50 yards, you're likely going to jail.

If your question is "will the combination of a Big Dot front sight and stock #8 rear sight produce an effective POI?", I cannot say. I've dealt with the folks at XS Sights several times and find them to be knowledgeable and helpful though. Would suggest that you give them a call and pose the question to them.

Just thinking about your proposal, I'd be concerned that the Big Dot front sight might be too large for the notch in the stock rear sight (meaning it would be "visually" too big).

Haha thanks for the replies guys. I get the whole point of big dots, but I'm not a fan. The way I see it is, if a threat is close enough to me that the big dots would actually be useful, point shooting would be as well. Shooting farther than 20 yards with those big dots is absolutely miserable.

TnkFrst, you totally got what I was trying to ask. Thanks for the advice, I didn't even think about calling XS.
I know the white dot itself is quite large but I was hoping that maybe, somehow, the actual tritrium might be at the level height as a regular number 8 sight or create as you said, "an effective POI."

Anyway, thanks for the advice guys!

I just finished installing a set of XS 24/7 Standard Dot sights on my new (to me) P239. What can I say, they work for me. I now have them on my P229, 245 and 239. If I could get my hands on a sight pusher for my P938 (or work up the nerve to "hammer and punch" them on), I'd have them on that one also.

I compared the stock #8 front sight to the XS front sight and there is a marked difference in the height (XS is taller). I doubt that a stock #8 rear sight with the Big Dot up front would provide an acceptable POI. Quite likely would shoot low. BTW, this P239 is chambered in .357 SIG and had #8's front and rear.

I'd still suggest talking to XS Sights.

I just ordered new night sights for my 239.

Has the factory SIG 3-dots. I just need to try something different, as I want to tighten my 10yd and 25yd groups up.

Looked at XS i-dot and Heinie i-dot. After several reviews and YT reviews, I went with Heinie. Reason: as stated above, I practice, and more precision is what I'm after.

XS does have two different size front dot sizes. If the BIG size (Big dot) doesn't work for you, think about the smaller dot (Standard dot). I came REAL close to going the Standard dot path.
That XS sights are ineffective except close engagement is a myth. Several VT vids have people shooting them at 25, 50, 100yds. Yeager is one example. The best sights for this distance, of course not.

#335P Sig SlantPro Straight Eight Night Sight Set is what I bought. My 239 and the sights are at my smithy being installed, so jury is still out.

Get a set of Trijicon HD sights and you will be good to go.

If you like that big dot, but want better sights, these are absolutely the way to go. I've been changing them out on all my carry guns, and some others. This is coming from someone that has several other types of night sights. They all look about the same in no light situations, but nothing beats them in low light which is a much more likely scenario. They're great in the daytime also.

being old seeing the sig night sights is hard without my reading glasses then i can't see the bull at 25 yards ,without my reading glasses i have 20/20 but at arms distance no go for the gun sights ,so i was thinking the same thing about the big dot front sight for shooting at 25 yards 10 yards just point and fire if i can't hit that maybe the shotgun LOL ,
im gonna mill a slide and do red dot ,i'll have to learn shooting "draw and aim" all over again to get that red dot every time ,but i wanted big dot "XS" and maybe HD rears some guy told me thats what he does and can see without glasses but never told me what size rear he put on .
i'm not shooting at fifty yard but to keep there heads down while i get to my shotgun .

Yeah, Trij HD's will pretty much give you the benefits of both the Big Dots and conventionals. Still not quite as precise past 25 yards being that they are pretty big and will likely obscure things pretty well out that far, but more precise aligning than just the wide V notch and bar.

Whether or not they will help at longer ranges, the Trijicon HD "XR"s give a little narrower front post, but still highly visible, with more "light" between front post and rear notch sides.

I guess it depends if your shooting is "targets" or self defense. Unless you are "blind" the primary "focus" should be a crystal clear front sight image, centered in your rear notch, and when using tritium night sights, it's still focus on the front with a "rough" alignment with the rear tritium inserts. Vision of the "target" should be limited to "identification", and "center mass" hold.

I’ve got a set of XS on a 226, no issues hitting head, or com from 25 yards, 99% of handgun shootings are no more than 10 yards. I’ve got a set of HD’s which are nice. I need a bunch of sights for multiple Sigs I’ll probably go with the HD’s with the thinner front, but I might grab a set or two of the XS with standard front.
