Just bought a M11-A1 in Army Green for my wife (who loves it except for the DA trigger pull), and it says P228 on the grips.
They all do...homage to the original

The differences are pretty well covered here, primarily the slide material. With that said, after acquiring my M11-A1 followed shortly by a P229r I quickly sold my P228's. My M11-A1 with some G10 grips is amazing and lest we forget the P229 Sport I picked up is about the best SIG I've ever laid hands on.
On the M11-A1, are the G10 grips the same size as you would purchase for a 229?

M11 a1

The M11 A1 is the last as far as I know of the P228s. In fact most if not all are shipped with P228 marked grips. This is not withstanding that the Sig web site states the M11 A1 is a P229 Hmmmm the Sig web site is and continues to be a MESS:banghead:

They are very similar.
I had a 228 and prefer the durability and better rust resistance on a nitroned 229
I have 30+yo P228s and have never had a problem with rust or corrosion.

The M11A1 is NOT a P228. It's a P229. See what happened when SIG used marketing gimmicks originally, when they introduced the M11A1? Many folks thought it was a P228. And, to this day, it still happens, as exemplified by this post ^^^.

Btw, regarding the SIG website on the M11A1, it is correct and not a mess, because they finally came clean and put it in the right section of the P229. The real mess was the original marketing.

Catman, I like the folded slide SIGs, 228s included, as much as the next guy, but within my humble experience they do not resist rust well if exposed to wet environmental conditions. Worst I can recall, was when one of my coworkers was out in the rain all day,and not being a "gun guy", didn't think about taking his SIG out of his wet holster after end of shift. When I later examined the gun, the slide was a rusted mess. Not just light rust/ cosmetic damage, but deeply pitted. So bad I strongly suggested he have it replaced. Like you, I never had a problem with rust or corrosion with my 228s or other folded slide SIGs, but I took care of them. But the slides, controls, etc. are just not very rust resistant as compared with slides with more durable finishes, or machined from stainless steel, etc....
