Front sights for senior eyes

As I get older I find that I have trouble focusing on my handgun front sight.

When I was younger black-on-black sights worked fine, not so much now.

I have a big honking white XS Sight on one 1911 that works great. But I don't like the XS rear sights and I don't see where they sell the front sights only.

I'm trying fiber optic front sights and they seem to work OK. I don't know how durable they are. They look fragile.

In the process of trying a gold bead front sight. Will probably have that installed later this week.

Tritium sights, like SIG's SIGLITE sights, work well. But many tritium sights, when they go dark around 10 years old, are little better than black-on-black sights.

Price is a factor. Fiber optics cost about $40, gold bead about $80, tritium (with or without fiber optic) about $150+. Trial and error can get costly.

What do you senior shooters out there use and recommend? I'm curious what your experience is to help us seniors stay competitive.

Fiber optics works well on range guns, they are not as fragile as you would thing. Would not want them on my EDC though. Three dot white sights work for me (my eyes are 68yrs old) for self defense distance. Not as much sighting going on there, more pointing.

If you wear glasses and don't wear progressive lenses you should try them. At 70 I had cataract surgery. Before that I wore the progressive lenses and they enabled me to shoot with both eyes open. If you try them spend the extra and go for upper end brand. If you belong to Costco their brand is upper end and the cost is reasonable.

This is a Ameriglo Hackathorn front sight that comes on the WC Beretta Centurion, it is sold separately from Ameriglo. I have put it on a WC 1911 and a Sig 229 Legion....nice big sight, easy to pick up.

I have two 15 - 20 year old Wilson CQBs. The tritium sights are obviously dead.

Where did you buy the Ameriglo front sight for your WC 1911? Did you have any trouble with the Wilson front sight dovetail?

I have the same issue with old eyes....I just put Truglo TFX Pros on my P320 and they are awesome. I have a regular fiber optic front sight on my 1911 and it unfortunately is worthless at my range as there is not enough light so I have a black post. Sorry for the picture quality - stupid smart phone.

61 years young. Trifocals, progressives, and a lifelong astigmatism.

Speed Sights on a P365, orange front, white rears, tritium for night (which in hindsight I didn’t really need). Best contrast sights I have used.

I will get my Dan Wesson ECP slide back from Novak tomorrow. Replaced the brass dot front sight with a Novak large orange dot. Looking forward to it as I had a hard time with brass dot. Also replaced rear with a tritium bar...it was just a black battle sight.

I have white dots on my SW1911 3” and they work great at the range.

I have tritium white dots on my DW Guardian (came that way). Work well at range.

The BEST sights I have and use? The DeltaPoint Pro red dot sight on my X-Compact and the Romeo1 on my P229 Legion. I am patiently waiting for the new red dots to be released for the P365XL and if they are solid, will buy an XL w/RDS to try it out for carry.

Wilson has also recently released some RDS’ and I suspect a Wilson EDC x9 with an RDS mounted is in my future. I just need to decide whether I want to modify one I own or build/buy a new one for a bit more.

I know you said money is an issue, but if you can find/try a red dot sight, your future sight searches may be over.

I favor the Orange Ring around the tritium front. I've got both Ameriglo, and Trijicon, and favor the Ameriglo, as the sights are not as tall as the Trijicon, which my MGW Sight tool can be "binding" height wise... here are my P226s...

Just yesterday, I put Sig X-Ray1 fiber optic sights on my P365. Same size as X-Ray3. Not wicked expensive. I think they're a winner.

PS: Thanks for the progressives tip. I tried 'em once, but too much head bobbing to put things in focus, and went back to bifocals.

I have 20/20 vision but am farsighted so I wear 1.50 reading glasses when I shoot. They enable me to clearly see my front sight without blurring the target. I've been using them for over 10 years with excellent results. I like the Sig X-Ray3 sights that are on both my P365XL and my P320 X-Compact.

I have found the Dawson green fibre optic front sight on the P320 X5 works well for my 83 yr old eyes, trifocals, astigmatism etc. I almost didn't put a Romeo1 on it, but I did. It is now at Sig for whatever they do along with the Romeo 1 from my P229 Legion RX.

If they don't act right when they come back, I can see a DPP or RMR in my future.

I'm 52 and far-sighted and use reading glasses. The larger the front sight, the better for me, so far. I have tried green and orange front sights, and a prominent white front sight blurs out the least for me, so that's what I use. Standard SigLites are not ideal for me. Best have been the XS Big-Dot sights with the white front ring, and tritium front and rear. I think these are being phased out by XS for a luminous milky green front sight ring. Second best has been the TruGlo Tritium Pro sights with the blacked out, textured rear sight and white ring on the front sight. These are cheaper (around $80) and also come in standard SIG sight heights (9mm/.357 and .40). I was recently issued a new service pistol with Ameriglo sights with an orange front sight. These sights don't work as well for me. Since the orange sight was still blurry, I QUAL'ed with reading glasses and shot a 336 out of 360, which is good for me. I have also tried the Trijicon HD sights with an orange front sight ring on my previous service pistol, and it was pretty much the same as the Ameriglo sights. Again, both of these are great sights, and I would have loved them when my eyes were better, but the other sights I listed above work way better for me. I have a set of green SIG X-Ray sights on back order for a P225A1, since I needed a 6/6 height combo, and I'm hoping those will be usable. XS big dots shot slightly high on that gun.
