I've decided to dump one of my 45's. Either the Sig 220 or the S&W 645 has to go. Which would you get rid of and why? The Sig is stainless but not Elite series. Both 8 rounds, single and double action. Sig is newer but neither fired much.

For a 45ACP, I'd ditch both and get a real nice 1911, but that's just me. I do really like the P220. If the P220 was optic ready I'd hang onto that one.
Yeah, I used to have quite a collection of 45's, buy sold most of them. I'm down to 3 Colt's a Remington
a Glock and these 2 stainless ones. The Sig is newer but much harder to rack but neither have ever misfired. Not even once. The Smith has been with me since the 80's and still has a God awful trigger. Very gritty. The Sig is smoother but not ambi, and I'm a southpaw.
I would say sell the 645 and keep the 220 if you want a shooter. If you are more interested in something out of production and different in your collection keep the 645.
This could be read 2 ways--keep the Smith because it it out of production and hard to find? Or sell it because it is out of production and hard to find.
I have both. Actually my S&W is a Gen 3 but it’s very similar to the Gen 2 645. I’d keep the P220. It’s a better pistol IMO and it doesn’t have an annoying magazine disconnect safety.
Definitely keep the SIG P220: simpler, quicker takedown, just as accurate if not more accurate, and almost universally highly regarded. Mine is the 220 Elite, which right out of the box had a superb short reset trigger, but I’ve never talked with any P220 shooter who didn’t like the pistol, whatever the model.🇺🇸🦅
Keep both unless you really need the money. Which one do you shoot better? Do you have any nostalgia attachment to the 645? I wish I had kept the guns I owned in the late 80's/early 90's.
If it was me, I'd sell the 645. I've never shot the S&W semi-auto's all that well, and I use to carry one on duty. I always thought the triggers were garbage. Where even the DA pull of the Sig has always been smooth. And I shoot those fairly well. I'm also a lefty but have always used my trigger finger to de-cock my Sigs.
I was going to kinda sorta commit heresy and suggest he keep the Smith on account of it being so hard to replace, but I just realized it’s 2nd Gen not 3rd which leads me to my next question. Whats the magazine availability situation like for the 4506 like? Asking bc I’ve long been interested in a 1006/1066 but it recently came to my attention that OEM magazines now cost somewhere north of $200 EACH! Which means if the gun doesn’t come with but more than one magazine it’s a much harder sell. The only Third Gen Smith I have atm is a 4003 and fortunately I have plenty of magazines for that one, and hopefully I’ll get a 59xx sometime. But the 10xx/45xx still piques my intrigue too. And there’s still honestly not that many good steel framed DA/SA 10mm’s out there. The P220 Legion is one of them though if you got the coin.
With the existence of 357sig, 40auto, and 10mm, I don't have much interest in 45acp, but if I were to buy a pistol in 45acp it would definitely not be a 1911.
At the end of the day, just keep whichever one you like shooting more.
For nostalgia, I’d keep the P220 if it was an old-school one (German, ST, anything without a rail, etc.). If not, I’d keep the Smith.
For practicality, I’d keep the P220. Mags and parts are still widely available because the gun is still in production. The same cannot be said for the Smith.
For collectability, I stick with the out-of-production S&W 645. Collector interest in 2nd & 3rd Gen Smith & Wesson autos is steadily increasing (along with prices/value).
The same things that make the S&W the collector's choice, work against it as an EDC pistol ... The 2nd & 3rd Gen S&W autos are no longer supported by the factory,
which means parts (including replacement magazines) are becoming more difficult to source & therefor more expensive if you can find 'em.
I would sell the P220 because it could always be replaced easier as it's still in production, keep the SW645 assuming you enjoy shooting both equally, if you like shooting one over the other, that's your answer.
Asking people on a Sig forum if they would rather keep a Sig or a S&W 😂. My vote is keep the P220, I like the lines better. Go ask the same question on a S&W forum and I bet you will get a lot of folks saying to keep the 645.
I’m a southpaw as well and I’d boot the S&W and keep the P220. I know what you mean about the S&W cruddy trigger. I had a compact S&W .45 and it was a gawdawful trigger. Think it was Third Gen Model 4516. Been 35 years since I had it.
Keep the Sig they aren't making stainless 220s anymore. If you are the original owner and get rid of it you'll never replace it.
