Went to a gun show today here in PA and picked up a NIB West German P226. The dealer got it from a guy who bought guns years ago and decided to part with some of the older stock. It was built in 1994 and came with box, papers and target. Paid $800 for it so didn't think it was off base. Really happy with this find.

Now here is the dilemma....It's NIB so do I shoot it or just store it?

Well I went to the show to pick up a West German Sig but didn't expect to ever find a NIB West German Sig. My intention like with everything including my bamboo fly rods is to use them. It does bother me to just store things and not use them because I have never been into that.

I think there is good advise given here. Shoot it but take care of it. Let me tell you all of my Sigs look like new because I am dedicated to proper gun cleaning. I clean my guns after each range time whether I shot 1 or 100 rounds.

As a purist, I say don't shoot it. Keep it safe and just enjoy the fact that you own a piece of history. Once it is used ...it can't be unused.

Technically if the guy that had it, isn't an FFL, and a 4473 was completed in his name, it's not NIB, it would be ANIB... and technically it's already been fired, if you have the "Test Target"...

As bblr stated, take care of it, and shoot it... lubricate it real well, get some quality ammunition, and enjoy it. Grease the barrel and frame/slide rails to preclude excessive wear, a little oil on all of the turning and rotating parts is all you need to do.

My opinion on guns or for anything collectable. Once the last generation that understands the history or has connection to that history, passes. There will be very low interest in them. Like baseball cards are to Gen X compared to the Baby Boomers. Edited to add I have a 92 226 that didn’t even have smiles on the barrel. It had no box and one original magazine. It’s developed the smiles on my first range trip. Its one of my favorite pistols, and I hope you enjoy yours the way you decide is best.

If the P226 is NIB, NOS, or unfired except for factory test firing, then I would not shoot it because the value of the gun will be diminished. However, if it is obvious that it has been fired, then fire away because I don't think the value will be lowered significantly. Personally, $800 is on the high end of what I would pay for a ANIB gun because I like to shoot my guns without any concern about value, but that is just me.

I spoke with an appraiser at the gun show. He said that I did well on price which was mainly based on the condition of the gun. He said keep it clean and shoot it sparingly if I wanted to maintain the value. I have plenty of other P226's that I can shoot. One of which has not been shot yet....P226 Legion RX.
