It's easier to get a P229 in either .357 Sig, or .40 S&W, so that way you can use P229 .357/.40 Magazines. Then if necessary you can use a 9mm Conversion barrel in the .357/.40 Slide to shoot 9mm with the appropriate Recoil Spring and Magazine.
As mentioned earlier, and maybe not explained very well, many early 9mm P229s used the same Magazines as the P228, which is based on the P226 Magazine profile. When the P229 was initially designed, they had to enlarge the Magazine, to provide a capacity of 12 rounds of .357 Sig, or .40 S&W. This created a profile which has a slightly wider body, and dual taper to the single column feed.
In the photo below, the 2 Magazines on the right, are P229-1 9mm Magazines, the same dimensionally as .357 Sig/.40 S&W P229 Magazines, which have the dual taper...
The 2 Magazines on the left are the early P228/P229 9mm Magazines which are shortened versions of P226 Magazines, and have a single taper...
While the P228/P229 9mm Magazines can fit in, and function in a later P229-1 sized Magazine well, the later P229-1 Magazines cannot fit in the earlier 9mm Magazine wells.
Honestly, I'm getting tired having to explain this so often, so many threads beat this subject to death...
