P365 SAS - Range Trip #2 - Accuracy Improving!

Made it to the range again with my P365 SAS. Last range report showed hits all over. This time I was able to keep hit patterns smaller (once I figured out which of my three circles to use - astigmatism!).

As I was only one shooting my side of the range, I made a concerted effort to observe nuclear blast flashes from using a ported barrel/slide and/or 1000 decibel explosions from same. Noticed neither through 120 rounds, identified below. Seems the same as shooting any other pistol I have, so not really any less recoil/flip either.

Target 1 - 20 rounds of P365 V-Crown 115g JGP @ 10 yards. The 5 hits to the right are before I realized I was aiming incorrectly with my astigmatism. Once I identified which of my multiple circle blurs to use, things went much better. Not sure what I did on low shot. Impressed by 10 yard accuracy. This is my carry ammo (in P365s).

Target 2 (Top) - 50 rounds of P365 Elite Performance 115g FMJ @ 7 yards. I’m sure 3 hits outside of circle are me being lackadaisical.

Target 2 (Bottom) - 50 rounds of Federal Law Enforcement HST 124g @ 7 yards. Three low left I attribute to end of session, rushing, and probably anticipating recoil without even thinking about it. The long distance shot I was trying to show how dim it was, along with distance, but my iPhone adjusted automatically.

All in all a much better range trip than the first one now that I’ve really figured out how to align my astigmatism up correctly with two eyes open aiming. One thing I will say that sucks about the SAS - the extra fouling that comes from ported barrel/slide - but I knew that going in.

So, based on your comments above related to the porting, would you still buy the SAS if you had to do it over again?

Yes, because the sights are awesome for my uses (two eyes open/astigmatism). Much easier to acquire for me than x-rays (that I had changed to Speed Sights on my stock P365 and left alone on my NRA edition since I don’t shoot it much and didn’t want to alter it much). The SAS is what I now carry. I’m not concerned about use in darkness as I rarely travel at night (retired) and I am currently using a larger gun for home defense.

If you mean because of the extra fouling, takes about 5 extra minutes to clean up, not a show stopper by any means.

If I was buying my first P365, the SAS would be my go to because of 1) sights, 2) SAS treatment. Not interested in XL as I have other pistols to fill that void (x-compact).

Bit off topic - Trekbike, I bought a 2020 Trek DS3 in early October this year. First bike since the 70s and loving it. Little bit over 100 miles in 6 weeks. Still tweaking the fit, but once I get it right, looking forward to lots more miles!

After the first few on the first target to better figure out my sight use with my astigmatism, I’d guess one or two seconds per shot, with a minute or two break after each magazine (arrived at range with 12 loaded magazines so no reloading).

I signed in at front counter at 1010, was home at 1055 (5 minute drive to range plus waking in, chatting with staff), to include pulling and writing on both my targets before entering active range, stepping out to ask them to turn on fans, and policing brass after every magazine or two. Oh, and taking pictures before engaging each target. And I always wash my hands after firing and before leaving range.

I really never use slow controlled shots unless at 15 yards with a 1911. I like to practice self defense shooting vice precision target shooting.

Didn’t seem louder than my other P365s, at least while wearing my regular headset. Not testing otherwise.

For me, different ammunition seems to make big differences in loudness. HST seemed louder than the P365 branded ammunition types.

Exactly the same for me. I took my new P365 SAS to the range today to shoot for the first time, and I really like the sights. I shot it back and forth with my standard P365 and I have to say I prefer the Meprolight sights, especially for quick target acquisition. At 5, 7 and 10 yards I found the SAS was just as accurate for me as the standard 365 with x-ray sights. I've read reviews online where some people complained of problems with accuracy compared to using the x-ray sights, but I didn't experience that at all.

As for the porting, I didn't notice any real difference in felt recoil, but it did seem to shoot flatter and I was back on target more quickly. I only shot range ammo though (Remington and Fiocchi 115 gr), so the recoil difference might be more pronounced with hotter self defense rounds. I'll have to see how that works on my next trip. I also noticed that it didn't seem any louder to me than the standard P365. The RSO said he noticed the difference, but strangely I did not.

I really love the P365. It shoots so well for such a small pistol. The SAS version is perfect for pocket carry, which is what I intend to use it for. Paired with a Raven Concealment trigger guard holster, the ideal setup for that mode of carry. And I don't care what other people say, those Meprolight sights are really neat.
