Ok, first good luck finding .357 Sig. Get the .40S&W conversion barrel for a backup.
Not sure if you can say about recoil. Its going to be relative/subjective to the shooter.
I mean I have no problem w larger rounds like .40S&W (I haven't put my .357 barrel in because I can't find ammo) , but my wife would.
A bit more recoil than my 226 Navy, even after the recoil reducer.

The second thing is that we don't know the shooter. I mean... the full frame Sigs feel natural in my paws. A bit large for my wife.
So he should find what's comfortable to shoot.

The third thing... we don't know where he lives.
In the city (Chicago) I have to worry about over penetration and putting my neighbors at risk. Sure Ammo plays a part in this.
Also while I like the MPX platform.... in IL we've got this brain dead thing called PICA.🤬
So if OP lives in IL, WA, etc ... some options aren't available. But since this is a pistol... we're mostly ok.

The fourth... remember I mentioned my wife.
Not sure if the OP is single, married or whatever. (I'm not judging.)
Any home defense gun should also be good for the wife/significant other to be able to use.
(My wife would probably grab the .22lr because of the OEG sight I have mounted on it for her... )

The other thing are sights. combat sights, or a fancy red dot sight?

And of course do you want a DA/SA or SAO w safety?
I prefer the DA/SA.

But yeah, I love my Sigs.

Use what you brung! Pretty much any gun will be better than nothing. If the consideration is to not be out outgunned, and the threat might include a home invasion type thing*, then an AR-15 pistol with suppressor, weapon light, and laser (for point shooting from any position) would be good (also consider penetration - I have no houses down range). That's what I use, but with a LEP (laser excited phosphor) light instead of a LED weapon light - the LEP is basically an "optical weapon" in and of itself. You hit someone in the face with that, you completely blind them and their instant reaction is to close their eyes and look away - it can cause eye damage.

For the nightstand, I have a P229 40 with laser, weapon light, and suppressor.

The suppressor goes a long way towards protecting your hearing, though indoors, I still wouldn't want to shoot with no hearing protection. I can't see stopping to put one hearing protection before putting on my glasses and looking at the alarm panel to see where the entry is occurring.

*No real statistics to back this up, but from my LEO experience, the last three years of which I most processed crime scenes for evidence, I can tell you that high end neighborhoods generally have much less crime, but when it does occur, it tends toward being more organized and serious.

I've posted this video before. I live in a small gated community of 20 homes, my house is up against the east flank of the Sierra, so lots of on foot escape paths, and generally the opportunistic bad guy would be on foot, so my house would be appealing to target from an escape path perspective. This bad guy got nothing, not seen on the video, but he opened my RV garage side door, which I leave unlocked (so not damage to the door). There's a cable over the knob on the inside, so the door will only open a few inches and the alarm keypad next to the door will be beeping - he knows his cover is blown. He fled, burglarized a car to the north of us, stole credit card and used them in CA 3 hours later.

This is what an LEP flashlight looks like at late dusk - the rocks are one third of a mile distant.

P365X or XL in 9MM with or without manual safety. Realize a number of the good people who answered your post are Sig collectors of Sig classics. Nothing wrong with the Sig classic pistols but for your needs the Sig P365X/L is my suggestion. P365 and variants entails a straight forward manual of arms.

All good suggestions, but until we know more about your specific needs and abilities, it will be difficult to answer. The 365 line would be great for concealed carry if you don’t already have that covered, and it would do a decent job of defending the home as well. If you’re brand new and interested in a dual use firearm for carrying and home defense, I would start here.

If you have a concealed carry firearm already and want something dedicated for home use, I would go with the P226/P229 suggestions. They are larger and heavier, which typically equates to easier to shoot and manage recoil. If it’s sitting in your nightstand, you won’t be concerned with size/weight like with concealed carry.

My $.02, anyway.

Pretty wide open question. Some kinda 9mm full-size handgun with at least 17 rounds in the mag. I prefer an ar-15 in 5.56 for a primary SD role but, full-size handguns in fast access safes around the house are good too unless everyone who might use a firearm is always carrying while at home.

I'm in a similar fact-finding mode as the OP. I bought a P226 in .177 pellet (under $100 on sale) to find out how well it fits me. I wanted much more time with it than just 15 minutes at a dealer and have been shooting it this week. Maybe the OP might want to consider that option if he isn't able to borrow one to take to a range.

If you can shoot it well it's really hard to wrong with damn near anything. As long as you're comfortable with it and hit what you're shooting at, that works. Some like lights, some don't ... some like suppressors, some don't ... some like red dots, some don't ... some like lasers, some don't. Some say you must have at least 12 rounds or 15 or 17 or 21 or a 50 round drum ... whatever. You need to find what works the best for you.

I bought a SIG 320C for a carry gun back in early '15 but soon found that with 15rd mags in it and trying to carry extra mags I just got tired of it quickly ... when it comes to carry I'm a bit of a minimalist ... I travel light. So my 320 became my new "house" gun. Tuned with an APEX flat trigger and transfer bar, I added better night sights and an INFORCE weapons light. I had given thought to a suppressor and picked up a threaded barrel but then I didn't want to spend the money or jump through the hoops to get one. Plus adding sub-sonic ammo too. So I just put on a little comp on the end instead.

I keep it loaded with SIG V-Crown 115 grn JHP, along with two more mags of same and a Surefire flashlight. Giving me the option of which light I want on. This set up works for me ... your mileage may vary.

Wife has P226 9mm in her night stand and mine is .40. You can also go P229 or P220 whichever fits you hand better.
