DA Trigger Reach

I'm a Sig newbie and have a P220 and a P226 that are both DA/SA. I love both pistols but have a problem reaching the trigger when shooting in DA. I've never considered myself to have small hands, but my index fingers are relatively short, if that makes sense. In DA, I feel like I have to adjust my strong hand grip to be able to get my trigger finger where it needs to be. I installed a short reach trigger in the P220, but it didn't really help a lot. Is there another modification I could make to correct this situation?

I can't speak for the P220, but I do have a P226 and P229 and have the same issue. The best solution I have found for myself on the P226 is I installed E2 grips and a short reach trigger. This combo is going to produce the shortest trigger reach possible I believe and it did help a lot.

As for the P229 I have G10 thin grips and will be installing a short reach trigger soon as well.

As the others have mentioned a combination of E2 grips and a Short Reach Trigger may help... the only thing about the E2 is the requirement to go to the E2 Mainspring Strut assembly. With your P226, it shouldn't be a problem, with your P220, it will depend on if it was German produced, on what all will be needed to change. Same with regards to the Short Reach Trigger, the early P220s used a narrower trigger, known as the "8mm" trigger, which was normally serrated, and was essentially either available serrated (normal) or smooth.

Pictures of what you have, with the grips removed, will help determine what you would need. Also the later polymer grips with the stippled texture are a slightly different contour than the earlier checkered polymer grips.

I could have sworn, I had commented earlier Baldwin. First, depending on your current configuration, will depend on what you can do.

The E2 grips are about the "smallest", but will require the E2 style mainspring assembly, which depending on the age of your P220 will require added replacements. Also the older P220s will not fit the Short Reach Trigger, as they used a narrower design.

It would be easier to determine, what you will need, by posting pictures of your pistols, with the grips removed.

The P220 is my first Sig. I traded a Glock for it at a gun show a couple of years ago. I think it was produced in 2007? As I mentioned, I have installed a short reach trigger. The original grips made the grip seem large and were slick. I've replaced them with G10s. They made the grip much better and helped some with the trigger reach. I think I may try the E2s, if they will work.

I bought the P226 Enhanced Elite new about a year ago. I guess it has E2 grips? The grips fit my hand really well but I'm struggling with the trigger reach. I will try a short reach trigger.

When I decided to get into handguns, I started with Glocks (I know). I was never comfortable with the safety (lack of). So when I decided I wanted a P series Sig, the DA/SA trigger was attractive. I've recently purchased a 1911 so I've gotten really comfortable with a SA trigger. If I had a do over, I would buy my Sigs with a SA trigger.

I'm not much of a photographer so please forgive the pic quality. I really appreciate everyone's input.

You would need the E2 "kit" so you would get the appropriate Hammer Strut and Mainspring Seat to use with the grips... not sure you would need the Decocking Lever or not. Your P220 has the later Hammer, so no problem there, and you already have the Short Reach Trigger...

The P226 could use the Trigger-7, which is the Short Reach Trigger, just like is in your P220...

I'm also "index finger challenged." The short reach trigger, combined with G10 grips did the trick for me, but taking the pistol to Robert Burke and allowing him to work his magic, truly got me to a place where I was comfortable with the pistol. He has a mod which eliminates about 90% of the DA takeup, which put me over the top. I had him modify all of my Sigs and I am truly in love with these pistols now.

Reach out to Robert via his website:

This ^. The "cam-pin" as it is usually referred to that takes out alot of the pre travel sounds like the most effective solution to what you are trying to accomplish. I believe bblr here on the forum also has his own version that works great as well.

If you want action work done, the suggestion to send it to Burke is a good one. If you just want to reduce the reach, and your comfortable working on your own stuff, the dual adjustable trigger from Gray Guns will take all the pre travel out, and also the over travel. They work great. I have one, and will end up with one or two more eventually. Just another option.
