I need opinions about which rifle would best suit my needs: A 551A1 or 556

I will use the rifle for target (paper and steel plates) shooting only. It will be scoped (ELCAN Spector) and will not be equipped with any lights, lasers etc. Ammunition will be my hand loads.

One of these rifles is next in line in my 20+ year informal project to “master” certain military style rifles. Mastering (to me) means:

Reading about them with a mindset of learning all that I’m interested in
Finding the best loads to match the rifle
Shooting targets that are near and far
Cleaning and repeating, cleaning and repeating, cleaning and repeating…

So far, I’ve mastered:

H&K 93
AR-15 (one Armalite, one Frankenrifle)
M-14 (one Springfield Armory, one LRB)
FAL

My background is a couple decades of USAF EOD, some 13 years LE, and a plethora of shooting experience with handguns, shotguns and rifles (in fact, I put 23k + rounds through my Armalite).

So: What are your thoughts about these two SIGs?

Thanks in advance.

Toy or "Tool?"

For YOUR purposes? 551A1, hands down.
It just has a cool factor that the 556 doesn't.
Now, if you were looking for a "tactical" rifle, I would have recommended the 556 Patrol. But it's just not as COOL as the 551A1.

Also, the 551A1 is much closer to the real thing than the 556 is.

I feel the 556 magwell ruins the overall lines of the rifle. AR magazines are more convenient, but... ehh.

That's why I chose the 556R (needed a Kalashnikov action, and one in 7.62 x 39mm too).

I would pick the 551A1 as my next toy - none of my firearms are "tools."

We're not calling them "toys" in blatant disregard of the weapons that they really are, mind you - it's just that this figure of speech seems to throw many panties in a bunch.

One of the reasons I dont frequent another forum site that I'm a member of. Called my 45 my toy and got called just about everything but a man! I told them it belongs to me and I'll use any damned term I want in reference to it!:)

Too "ARed" for my tastes, but that's just my personal opinion.

Didn't particularly like the "fishgill" foreend, much less the railed ones.

I'd buy the rifle that resembles the original the most, without any rails, or any "tactical" stuff - and appreciate it for what it is, a rifle with conservative European design.

I wonder how much it would cost to to "de - SCMize," though.

Sub - $1000 IS interesting.

I know what you mean.

I hate their type, too.

Thanks people. I appreciate your advice.

@ Edsel: Toy as my workdays with a weapon are over. Too, I had no confusion about the terms toy/tool - made perfect sense to me.

Have decided that of the 551A1 & 556 choice, the 551A1 wins. However, researching the whole issue I've found interest in the 556R so this process is now 551A1 v 556R (unexpected detours are part of the fun in my mastering project).

I know the 5.56 well but have only little experience with the 7.62X39. As I have no interest in AK-style rifles the 556R should add an interesting twist as I can experiment with new loads in a new rifle.

Thanks again.

I absolutely love my 556R.

So easy to maintain, with all those cavernous spaces and Tonka - sized parts.

Does it have a thicker barrel, or the same "pencil" barrel sans flash hider?

Saw it, and the others - but I'm having difficulty estimating the difference (if any) in barrel thickness between the regular and non - SCM models.

Did you bid for it?

Can't seem to find it...

That's way too much ammunition for me

I only keep a thousand of each caliber at the most, in my tiny little apartment...
