Sometimes SP2022's can be had at around $400 and they are pretty decent. If you have to buy at a LGS though even that is probably not going to happen 🤔

If I am in the market for a handgun to use as one of my primary EDC's and a SD gun for home defense, price is not an important consideration, my life is.
Like I said "This gun will primarily be used as a home defense/training pistol. Concealed carry is not a goal for this gun."

If I had it to do over I would swallow my pride and buy a .22LR as first pistol. Something like a SW22 Victory. It would've helped me get better faster. Even after you have the basics down there are so many small kinks to iron out and it helps a lot if your mistakes only cost 6-7 cents instead of 25-30

This is generally my mantra. There are some nice options in that price range as mentioned above. But as I said, a few hundred more gets you in some nice territory.

If the gun will be used as a home defense/training pistol, I would recommend the CZ P 10F instead of the CZ P 10C. It has a 4.5 inch barrel and is currently the same price as the CZ P 10C at Sportsmans Warehouse ( https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting...un-supplies/handguns/cz-p-10-f-9mm-luger-45in-black-pistol-101-rounds/p/1542987 , CZ P-10 C 9mm Luger 4.02in Black Pistol - 10+1 Rounds ). The extra sight radius will improve accuracy, and since it won't be used for EDC the extra slide length won't matter.

How about a Glock clone? Something with better features like sights, trigger and ergonomics. The PSA dagger and IWI Masada come to mind.
I had mentioned the Masada to him as an option. I don't know of a shop locally that carries Dagger and he definitely wants to shoot it before he buys it.
There is a Beretta rebate going on for these right now if you get one before it expires.
You are correct. thanks for that. They have a $100 rebate through Aug 31st 2024. That puts the APX A1, or APX A1 Compact $325.39 out the door after tax, which brings it in way under budget.

Be cautious, even with the A1 versions... Apparently there are still functionality issues.

Outside of some finish issues on the early models, I have heard of no common problems with the APX A1 and A1 Compact. The APX A1 Carry on the other hand I have heard of several common issues but that is an entirely different gun in every way except name and removable chassis.
Please enlighten me on these common issues with the APX A1 full-size and A1 Compact.

I really like Sig, HK, CZ, Glock, and Beretta firearms... Within the last six months I was considering a new HK vp9, CZ p10, or Beretta APX A1, in a Compact or Full size... After hours of research on all three, I took the Beretta off my list because I saw enough issues on gun forums, YT, and blogs, that I decided the Beretta probably still needed some time before it was fully mature and updated- in comparison to the HK vp and CZ P10 models.

I feel I'm correct based on that research, but that doesn't make you wrong in your experiences with the A1 models.

It doesn't interest me to spend my time doing web searches on the A1 models again, and it's best for potential buyers to do the web searches, reading, and make their own decisions.

It's possible in 2-3 years I'll buy a new APX A# in Compact, "Centurion" or Full size (I really like the ODG & FDE colors), but not until then.

All the “options” you listed are striker-fired….is that a requirement?

A Bul Cherokee Compact (or full size) can be found for $250. Ergonomic, good shooters.

Frankly, for a new shooter (especially in a home defense situation), I’d recommend a DA/SA as a starting point. A little less likely to have an unintentional discharge in a tense situation.

I’m gonna buy a CZ P10C soon. I’m ashamed to say I own zero CZ pistols and I do know how good they are. I’ve shot a few variants that guys have at the range.
I’ve simply been collecting every HK pistol I can for the past several years (have almost all of them 😬). So I’ve kinda been a HK then Glock then Sig guy. I need CZ and it’s a good place to start as I’d want to carry it. If only more pistol came with paddle magazine release’s.
Let’s push him into the CZ p10c for the price range!! Solid, dependable, smart choice at that price range.

I have an acquaintance who is new to shooting. He is looking to buy his first handgun. He has taken his safety classes and obtained his pistol permit. We have gone shooting with another friend and let him try several different firearm brands and types. Between me and my buddy, he has shot my P320C, and P320 X compact with a Wilson grip module, M17, CZ P 10C. S&W M&P Shield Plus, S&W M&P 9c, Shadow Systems MR920 Combat, My buddy's G19, and 1911. He liked both P320's, the P 10C, MR920, and Shield Plus but liked the larger guns the best. We have kind of honed in on a 3.5"-4" 15-round compact is where he wants to be for his first gun. We are in a capacity-restricted state so when I refer to 15-rounds I am referring to typical size. This gun will primarily be used as a home defense/training pistol. Concealed carry is not a goal for this gun. So that being said his wife has given him a hard limit of $500 out the door for the gun alone. He has asked for recommendations in that price range for guns he can go rent to try and possibly buy. He wants his first gun to be new, not used, and optics-ready would be a plus but not required. I told him I would have to do some looking and let him know. So I guess I asking for a little help here with suggestions. My shortlist given to him so far is as follows.
CZ P10c
Beretta APX A1 Compact (side note I am grabbing one of these next month as a B-Day present to myself)
IWI Masada
What would you suggest?
1911. it's the only weapon in the list not 9mm and with a manual safety
