I figured I would start a thread for P290 info, tricks, parts and accessories. Anyone who has good info to add for the P290 post it up.

There are two versions - the P290 and P290RS. The RS is the redesigned model with "re-strike" capability. Translated from Sig-speak that means the RS is a true double action trigger vs. the original which is a hammer fired pistol that Sig called a DAO but which in reality functions more like a single action pistol where you need to rack the slide and then it goes to a half or pre-cocked position from which the trigger pull will fully cock and release the hammer.

Serial wise the originals are 25A00xxxx and somewhere along the way they revised it. Not sure if that started with 25B00xxx or when exactly.

You can send in an original P290 to Sig Sauer to have an original P290 converted to the RS hammer/trigger system. Cost is $99 + shipping both ways. They have prepaid shipping both ways via Fed-Ex 2 day for $55. Call first to get an RA number and then send it in. I was told the turn around time is about 2 weeks from when they get the gun.

I forgot to mention one potential issue with the Hogue Handall Jr. with regard to concealed carry... Depending on how you carry, Hogue's rubber is sufficiently grippy that it can cause your shirt to grab and bunch up (or ride up) at the handle of your pistol, increasing printing. If you carry deeper, though, like I do for appendix carry, with most of the pistol grip at or below your beltline, it shouldn't be an issue.

Hey guys, just stumbled back into sigtalk. Not enough love for the 290 out there!

I've been carrying mine daily, either IWB strong side(right hip) or pocket carry(right front). I'm just getting into shooting IDPA, and have been a Glock fan for a long time. I was looking for a Mini Glock(the single stack 9mm) that doesn't exist to replace my Kahr PM40, and decided the P290RS was going to be my next carry. Had I know it performs as well as it does I would have grabbed one earlier.

I shoot the 290 once a month in a revolver match that's patterned after the IDPA rule set, but they limit to 6 rnds in the gun. The gun will out shoot me, so there's plenty of skill to be gained shooting on the clock.

I probably have 600 rnds thru it now, pretty much all cheap range ammo, and the only failures i've had were shooting TulAmmo, it seems the batch I have the primers are set deeper, so it may fire on the first time, or on the restrike, or not at all. Any other ammo has been 100%.

I put the Hogue Jr grip on to protect my side from the grip texture, and have been waiting on another grip option to surface. I ended up putting the grip on upside down then trimming it to fit around the mag release. Before the Hogue I was using an innertube from a road bicycle just to keep the grip from my side.

Hi all!
New to the Forum. Just picked up my P290 on Saturday, and so far I'm loving it! I do agree though, not enough love for the P290. Definitely among, if not THE best, of the Micro compact class. Feels and shoots like a bigger gun. The price has come down significantly as well, with our dealer's list at $599 with laser and usual accessories and they will deal down to around $500. Perhaps it is the "bad rap" of the early 290's, although I believe those issues were overblown as well. But when I walk into gun shops down here, (there are plenty in South Florida), while looking for accessories, I hear the same thing: "Well, we don't carry much for that model, it's not popular."
I read about all the custom parts that were "coming soon" that have never made it to production I assume. It's disappointing. Anyway, love the forum and this thread, I will be watching it closely.
regards. Gary

If this isn't the most comfortable holster for this gun, I'll pull for Tim Tebow.

I'm still looking for the "perfect holster" as I'm a rookie regarding carrying and still find many holsters uncomfortable. The description doesn't say much- is this an IWB only? If so, it looks like it takes a good bit of waist space. Will I still be able to use my favorite jeans with this and not feel "strangled" like my other IWB's?
Thanks

It's thin and wide. Thin means not as much waist size taken up. I don't wear tight shorts and pants anyway.

Being wide, disperses the weight. Wear it often and let it mold to you. Soon, you feel odd without it.

It's IWb only. I would also get the leather clips. They blend so well with a belt.

CompTac makes their EXCELLENT Infidel Ultra for the P290. In my opinion the best IWB holster money can buy.

I'm personally holding out for the P224 SA/DA 9mm SAS. I know it's probably a bit bigger than the P290 but then I can always get that too. :D

I just picked up my P290RS...first impressions without shooting it are...

Feels nice to my hand for a small 9mm pistol...grips are grippy ...sights are SiGs usual (well Meprolights anyway) excellent white dots during the day and green glowing at night...the trigger felt better after just a bit of dry firing and a touch of lube (after cleaning the pistol)...the little finger step on the 6 round mag is just right for me...and I've got fairly big hands with long fingers...I like the very positive feel and ejection with force of the magazine release...I chose the Nitron version as I have had good luck with this finish and bristle at the thought of paying more for the slide with no finish even if I like 2 Tone pistols... (sure I know the plane stainless needs some work the Nitron might cover up and that's the reason for the cost but hey...still...)

I'm really hoping this is a winner and I don't regret passing on the Shield (as a SouthPaw I drew the line with the slide safety...Murphy's Law and all)...or the XDs...a bit more money than the P290RS or the Shield...as well as some added weight and size by comparison...

Good luck with your choice...

I decideed between the same two (plus the Beretta Nano, which happened on be on 'sale"). I chose the P290 over the Shield for the same reason- I'm a lefty also and I liked the fact of no slide lock.

I started with the Winthrop IWB all leather holster. It works pretty good and I really like it but I needed something better suited fot summer.

Since I work outside almost all of the time, I wanted something light and thin for concealment. I went with the Comp-tac Infidel all kydex holster. I ordered all the different retaining options thinking the belt snaps might be good. Tried them the first day, then switched to the regular belt "clip" and haven't changed it since. It's a nice easy on and easy off holster. The clip retains very well. I started wearing a thin tanktop (wife beater??) under a button up uniform type shirt. The tshirt is there just to keep the P290's rough grip off the skin. With this cover combo, and the Infidel holster worn somewhere between the 3 and 4 oclock position, a lot of the time I forget its there.

If it gets really hot, I leave the p290 at home and throw the DB380 in the pocket.

For winter carry, I might go with a **** holster. I'ver read nothing but good reviews of it. I just think that style holster would get way too hot sitting on a piece of equipment all day in the summer.

And my P290RS holster drawer begins...

Re: P290 accessories:

The Sig site mentions some accessories on the way for the P290. In particular, a selection of aftermarket grips in metal, wood (or wood-like), etc. Anyone know if they've been scrapped by Sig, or if anyone else makes these aftermarket?

P290 Light strikes

I reload a lot and my 290 hates my reloads. I will usually have 3 light strikes in an 8 round magazine. Sig has inspected the gun and says there is nothing wrong with it. They (of course) don't recommend shooting reloads but I must point out that ALL my reloads and my FTF's in the Sig shoot fine in my Glocks. This happens with CCI, Remington, and Magtec primers. So what gives? This gun has a light hammer spring? Maybe the firing pin doesn't project far enough? I have researched parts for this gun and other than OEM Sig and Galloway precision, there doesn't appear to be much available for this gun. This weekend I plan a long range session with this gun and factory ammo. Then we'll see. Mean time any ideas would be appreciated.

P290 trigger question

I've been thinking about something lighter, smaller, thinner, etc. than my P250 SC for everyday carry and read some good things about the P290 RS. Found one at a local gun shop and inspected it, dry fired it, etc. I was prepared (and hoping) to be very favorably impressed.

I was favorably impressed. Good build quality, smooth trigger not too much heaver than my P250 SC, etc.

What appears to be a 'deal breaker' of a problem, however, is the grip/trigger relationship. When using the first pad of my finger, I can fire the gun fine even though my finger sticks out like a scarecrows arm. I think it would be fine in a shooting range/precise aim and fire situation.

However, when grabbing the gun as I might in a 'need it now!' situation, and attempting to fire the trigger with my distal joint, the pull required the trigger to go so far back that I was only firing possibly one out five attempts. Literally, at least four out five attempts would not end with a trigger break.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? As I mentioned, other than the trigger problem, I think the P290 RS would be an excellent carry gun.

Along the same lines...does anyone have any personal experience/comments comparing the ease/comfort of carrying the P290 vs. the P250 sub compact?

Thanks in advance for all responses

I have a 290RS and I'm having a "trigger job" done on it as I type this. My gunsmith is going to shorten the pull by 50 percent and decrease the pull from 9lbs to around 5 lbs. He is doing all of this without changing any springs or compromising the quality of this fine pocket gun. I can't wait to get it back...oh yes, its getting a special Cerakote job as well. I will post pictures and report on the trigger when I get it back.

P290 Light Strikes

As promised, I took the 290 to the range for a reliability check. The SIG repair tech said he found nothing wrong with my gun. Well he must have fixed something! The gun functioned perfectly, firing 70 of my reloads and 32 shells of my Hornady "carry" ammo with no FTF's. The gun's trigger is smoother so I suspect he did a bit of polishing while he was in there. I am very pleased with the result but I am a bit miffed at the "there's nothing wrong with it" song and dance. A web search for P290 problems finds many owners with the light strike problem. My gun had it and they fixed it. So why not just admit they have a problem and tell me what it was they fixed? Another question I have is, why did they redesign the gun to give it restrike capability? RESTRIKE? In my carry gun I want the first shot to fire! I may not get a chance to restrike!

I will continue testing until I get several hundred problem free rounds thru the gun before I will be carrying this pistol again.

most of the issues were with either the older P290 minus the RS (re strike capability) or with certain cartridges...as long as you stick to 9mm you know your P290rs likes...you should be good to go...

I really like mine but have not gotten mine to the range as yet...plan to use Speer Gold Dot standard velocity 124GR 9mm in mine...

the re strike ability was to overcome possible issues with the small pistol and certain ammunition...re strike ability is better than one strike ability wouldn't you agree???...again...find the cartridges your pistol likes and stick to that and we should all be good to go...

Just some info to add to this thread: The Sig P290RS with the laser fits perfectly in an Uncle Mike's Size 16 holster. The holster is slightly taller than it needs to be, but not enough to worry about or need trimming, and the fit is great. If you want a cheap solution for a holster that will hold your P290RS with laser, Uncle Mike's Size 16 is the ticket.

I almost always carry in a 3 Speed Holster tailored to fit my pistol, but since that holster hangs from its own velcro belt, I bought the Uncle Mike's as a cheap back-up to keep in the car for times when I need to run in quickly to a store and want to clip on my pistol quickly and discretely, without having to find somewhere to strap on the 3 Speed Holster (which requires more effort and privacy). I wouldn't want to rely on the (somewhat flimsy) Uncle Mike's for every day carry, but for this purpose it's great.

cghelton, if it'll fit a P290, it'll fit a P290RS.
The "RS" has a fractionally thinner slide lock and shorter mag release. Not enough to really effect holster compatibility.
The hammer also sits "deeper" and the "beaver tail" is extended. These won't effect that kind of holster.

As far as disassembly? I too, prefer the left hand finger tip compression method. Using the right hand and a chop stick (my preferred tool) to push out the slide stop.

*IMPORTANT* Don't forget to line up the notch on the slide! Let the slide go just forward of full retraction, to find the "sweet spot." Much like a 1911.

I too, would really like a light. With the overall shape and mounting method of the laser.
I also sold off the laser, meh.

I've been using a Remora, size 4ART, since I got my P290RS. I initially got it as a stop gap, until I could get something better. It's been working so well, I'm still using it.

I like it. I wear it around 2:30-3:00, with the grip nearly vertical. It works well that way. I drive truck for a living and can't stand a grip in my kidney, for a 14 shift. I keep wanting to upgrade, to something nicer that can be reholstered. But, it just works, and it's an odd cant. I've been doing this long enough. I don't need to take my gun out all day.

I also have a 4ART remora holster and like it very much. I found out that remora makes a 4ART size with Reinforced Top or "RFT" and remora writes:
"The Remora "RFT" Holsters have all the features of our Original "No Clip" Holsters plus a Reinforced Top that provides safe, smooth and secure one handed reholstering draw after draw."

I have been thinking of exchanging for this version but am not sure if I would need it. Good luck!

Until recently, I have been using the sig kydex holster that came with my P290RS. It was comfortable until recently when the "catch" inside the holster "wore off". Now the gun will not hold as designed.....it just slips out. Has anyone else had this problem?
