P228 West German Opinions

I have been searching for a nice Sig P228. One of my local gun shops called me yesterday because they just got a nice trade-in.

It is stamped, "Made In West Germany". All three serial numbers match on barrel, slide, and frame. Proof marks under slide read "KF", which means it was made in 1995.

Comes complete with original grey case, owners' manual, and test-fired target, 2, 10-round magazines, marked, "Sig Sauer, Made in Germany".

They sent 15 photos of gun for me to examine, since I live 85 miles away from their store. I have bought 3 other new guns from them. So, I do trust their integrity.

Only flaws in gun are minor "holster wear" at front edges of slide and at top of barrel hood. SIG can re-blue slide for $99, so not really an issue.

The price is $595.

I feel this this a great deal.

What do you Sig-Nuts think?

Also, can I use a Sig 13-round magazine, for carry? I can use the 10-round mags at my club, which limits you to 5 rounds at a time. I know the 229-1 mags will not fit properly.

Many thanks for your opinions!

My only question would be why you haven't driven the 85 miles to get it yet! Seems like a good buy.

I recently consummated my search for a P228. The one I found was a year later (KG), marked Germany, not West Germany, and didn't include the box, manual, or target.

It should come with two high cap 13 rd. mags. since it was made in Germany.

Unless in your state high cap mags are not allowed?

The gun club is about 61 years old, with no casualties. Safety is their first and most important concern. You cannot have a holstered weapon on the grounds, even if your are a LE official (unless on duty).
Trap and Skeet were their origins. We have an indoor pistol range, outdoor rifle/pistol range, and archery. Full membership at 1,500.

Now, I don't follow the German/W.German/Exeter time line too closely, but I am kind of a fan of history. The "Iron Curtain" came to an end in 1990, so I'm wondering how the 1995 West German even exists at all. The 1996 German makes perfect sense, though????

My 90's model 228 is not a '95, but I wish it were. It's been in the safe never fired by me for over 2 years now and it will see rare duty. I plan to break it out only on very special occasions... maybe the first beautiful day this spring.

What's the shop name? I'll pay for a round trip ticket, buy the gun and still be out ahead! [Oh, except it would be illegal for a CA license to buy a gun in PA; although my son's friend had a fake PA license to buy college-aged alcohol with... maybe I could use that...]

The P228 has been secured with a deposit, since the store called and informed me that they located one for me.

I plan to go there next week for inspection of gun. I hope it looks as good as the photos they sent.

Chances are, it will be in my hands very soon!

Well guys, today was the the day to pick up P228. The P228's condition is better than the photos the store sent to me!

It does have triple-matching serial numbers and proof marks under slide, stamped KF, which is 1995.

Slide is stamped: W. Germany, grips are original. It has the SigArms grey plastic case, with a perfect condition owner's manual and test-fired target. Both 10-round mags are marked: Sig Sauer, Made in Germany. Two dot sights are flawless.

Gun is clean inside as well, no rust anywhere. I field stripped gun at counter. Barrel shows minimal wear on the outside, inside looked great.

I was able to negotiate price down to $550. I have known the family/owners for over 30 years, and have bought several gun from their store. It is very close to my deer hunting camp.

Tonight, I plan to field strip, clean, lube, and oil everything. Sunday, going to my indoor range at the club to see how well the 228 fires.

I am really happy about this gun. I was searching for a long time for a W. German P228.

Thanks for everyone's input!

Never made it to range on Sunday, but will try later in week.

I'll attempt to post photos of the entire kit and 228 as well.

Thanks guys, I am SO excited about this deal on the P228.

So far, this 20 year-old 228's trigger seems a lot more crisp, in DA or SA, than my 14 month old 229. The de-cocker also seems more "positive" when engaging down. Not sure why.
