P226 Grips

Hello All!

I'm mostly a lurker on here, but I would like some clarification on my P226 Grips. I have a completely stock P226 with the E2 Grips and I am trying to figure out my options. I have searched a ton of threads on this topic, but haven't come to a clear conclusion.

I think I want a rubber Hogue Grip similar to the finger grove grip that I put on my P239 SAS however a lot of people seem to be recommending aluminum grips or rubber grips without the finger groves. I have large hands and I'm trying to get something that fits 'just right'.

This is primarily a bedside gun, so bulk/size isn't a huge concern.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bill

Welcome to the Forum.
I have the Hogue Finger groove grips on my P226.
I just did not like the E-2 Grips it came with.
You will get many thoughts on this question. All will be different and personal thoughts.
Thats the nice thing about having many options.

Hogue finger grooves can be found for about 15.00

If you have big hands, then the E2 grips really aren't your best option.

The aluminum grips are meant to add a little heft while still maintaining a thin profile. For that reason, aluminum grips aren't really the best option for people with big hands, either. Also, aluminum grips have a tendency to heat up during extended shooting, which can become quite uncomfortable on hot days (it's kind of nice in the winter). If your goal, however, is to add a little heft to to help mitigate perceived recoil, then Sig's factory aluminum grip is the way to go, IMHO.

Honestly, your best bet will be to stick with the rubber grips or purchase a set of wood grips. You'll find that wood grips are typically thicker than grips made of other material.

I have extremely large hands, and the only grips that I've ever bought that fit "just right" were Karl Nill and the Hogue Rubber (finger grooves).

All that being said, you really can't go wrong with aluminum or G10 grips: they are beautiful and functional, but they won't fill the palms of your hands the way rubber or wood will.

A P226 under my pillow every night. 16 rds of safe dreams. Whatever you decide to do you are well protected my friend.

My idea of sexy grips would be rich, dark, lovely woods. I dont have E2 however.

Grips are really a personal thing, sort of like shoes. You wouldn't buy a pair of shoes in size 11 based on my recommendation, the same should apply for grips. It's been a while since I've been there, but how about stopping by Action Impact on 8 Mile just east of Grand River. I bet they have some P226, P229 and P220 on display with different grip styles you could try. Granted, the P229 and P220 grips would be a little bit different and it would be preferable if they had a good variety of P226's in stock, but will at least give you an idea. Don't forget that they have rentals there, also, if their display models are limited.

I have hands that are on the larger side and the E2 grips were supposed to be life changing but I wasn't a fan of them at all, plus I think they made the gun look silly with the skinny grip and thick slide and frame. The most comfortable grips for my big hands would be the magwell grips that come on the Tacops. You can get them on the Sig website for 40 dolars shipped. I put them on my Combat P226 as well and I guarantee you they are very comfortable for bigger hands.

I've ditched the E2 grips on my P229 and put on Hogue G10 chain. These were swapped with the black plastic on my M11 A1 D. My P239 ended up with Hogue finger grip rubber. My P226 went from magwell grips (for looks) to stock green plastic; Not happy with these and will experiment more. My SP2022 tried a set of large grips, but I went back to small.

The point of all this is that, like holsters, find what works for you by trial and error.

Welcome!
I have tried a few of the Hogue grips, and I haven't yet found one that I didn't like! They're ALL great, haha! Here are the ones that I have:

I will say this... out of the grips that I've tried... OEM plastic, G10 Extreme, aluminum, and rubber... the Hogue rubber grip with grooves is the bulkiest and gave me the firmest purchase on my P226, resulting in my best groupings at the range. I would not hesitate to get these for your bedside gun.

If I have my best results using the rubber grips, why don't I stick with them? Well, I found that wearing a good pair of shooting gloves equalizes my performance with the different grips. So now I mix it up after every cleaning. I think the G10 looks the best, especially in the piranha grip. The G10 is also available in the magrip model which is great for bigger hands and work great with the extended magazine. Unfortunately, they are pretty expensive, too ($120 at the hogue website).

You mentioned you had a similar grip for the P239, so I'm posting pictures of my P226 hogue rubber grip next to a ruler. You can compare the width and height of the grooves to the grip of your P239 to see if they are similar or will fit better/worse.

Good luck!

A dissenting voice: I swapped from the old stock style to E2 grips on my P229, and absolutely love them. I have large-ish hands, and my firing hand almost entirely swallows the whole grip, which is purrrrfect to me. With the E2s, I can single hand fire, and when my support hand comes in, the pistol locks down hard and won't budge.

It was like owning a new firearm.

How about aluminum grips with rubber Pachmayr finger grooves?

Groovy, Bebe.
