The SME etc dosent reduce noise. It just redirects it downrange. If you're in a house, well it won't change a thing I don't think. (If it's the same device I think it is. Been a while since I browsed those so I could be wrong.)
I have a small can I chose for similar reasons. I chose the Rugged Razor. Little chunky since it's a qd mount system but it's crazy well built and keeps the package small. It's pretty darn quiet too. Not the most quiet... but great for it's size.

there is no law of physics that prevents a structure that traps gas fron dampening a pressure wave from a muzzle blast despite whatever it’s “classified” as

this gentleman performed a reasonably well designed test of various muzzle devices on the rattler, and actually showed a pretty significant behind the gun decibel reduction with a Noveske kx5. not too surprising considering it’s essentially a single baffle suppressor (shh)
Well I guess I should rephrase what I said. Some yes may shave a few decidels.
As a whole tho all that data don't apply once you step indoors tho.
Pound for pound tho, the small reduction gained by adding those few inches to you're rattler tho, (short of using a real can), can be achieved basically by using a 556 of the same barrel length and not using the Rattler at all tbh. Plus you get more velocity.
So it's about diminishing returns that become redundant perhaps?
But that's why we use 300. And why we use cans, and Rattlers. We get the damage we want and keep the sound bearable.
To chop a 556 off short and lose so much power, then make it longer to deal with the noise that wouldn't be there had you not chopped it off seems counterintuitive to me. Plus ya lost alot of power.
But either way. There's no wrong way to do it I guess. So long as it don't mess up reliability is all and it can get the job done.
Good luck!
