Intruder beat chest, ate grass, then twice punched holes through door's glass; homeowner shot him each time, but he kept getting up. Fatal shots came after he busted door down.

The problem with this would be if you're in an area where thugs run in packs.
They aren't smart enough to flee when the buckshot drops two or three guys in front of them, 5 or 6 rounds and you're done, literally.
Not really, with either a mag fed 12ga bullpup w/10rnds, or a Keltec KSG w/12+1, that's some serious PITA!

Here's a good one for ya'll. I believe this happened in Indiana many, many moons ago since it was told to me when I was in the academy in the mid 80's.

A young rookie was in pursuit of a POS jacked up on PCP who just committed a home invasion or bank robbery and if my memory is correct he also commented a homicide x2. Anyways, this rookie was fired upon by the perp, the LEO returns fire with two slugs and one hits the perp directly bullseye in the mid spine. Now by all physiological facts the perp should have NOT taken another step, right?

Well this POS made it another 2-3 blocks to an ER and slumped over and died in the entrance. The perp made all that distance on dope and adrenaline. Some of you other LEOs may have also heard this too. People all hyped up on dope DO NOT feel pain. Period.
I suppose that's possible, but me? I'd file that one under 'Urban Legends.' The spine being damaged, NO signal from the brain to the legs. Perp drops on the spot! JMO

From most videos I've seen most thugs are cowards that flee as soon as any lethal resistance is offered. Except during riots. And even then, sometimes.
Sometimes, maybe other times it may be suicide by cop. Either way, when dealing with hyped up 'crazed' bad people, Violence is 'Their way of Life'. Might have been shot or stabbed before, who knows. In the end it's a scary & very sad commentary of our current society. Be Safe, Shoot straight and pray for the best outcome possible.

While some find them controversial, the books by Evan Marshall and Edwin Sanow make a strong case for putting more emphasis on power than the FBI 12-18" penetration in a calibrated gel accounts for. Within limits, bullet makers can achieve the FBI results by changing how, how quickly, and when the bullet expands given expected velocity somewhat independent of energy. A small, slow, slowly expanding bullet might penetrate 12 inches with 150 ft-lbs, where a big, faster moving, faster expanding projectile fails to penetrate 12 inches but imparts 300 ft-lbs or more.

Based on their research of actual gun fights, faster bullets tend to be more effective, and projectiles imparting more energy tend to be more effective. An extreme example is the little 55 grain bullet used to "vaporize" the elbow of one of the Kenosha thugs who was illegally carrying a Glock. Speed is effective and speed is a direct component of energy.

That's why I like 38 Super and 357 Sig.

If I could effectively conceal carry a 10mm, I would, with Underwood 135gr JHP at 768 ft-lbs ME.

I'm under no illusions - there will be outlier scenarios where more capacity would be better than more power, or where even a 44 magnum will be inadequate. My conclusion only applies to the scenarios I think are the most likely I will encounter. Others will make an equally valid assessment based on their situation and come to a radically different conclusion. I hope we're both right.

LuckyGunner has a good video titled "Why Ballistics Gel Works and Caliber Arguments are Dumb" - bottom line, all handguns pale in comparison to rifles - thus the 55 grain vaporizing a thug's elbow. That's true, but as I am not going to be carrying an AR on a 3 point sling or Winchester 71 in 348 Win cut-down to a mule's leg configuration everywhere I go, I need to find something more practical.

...although a Winchester 71 mule's leg would be pretty awesome open carry.

(not a Model 71, and those 45-70 cartridges would not fit in that 1892)
I liked the info content of the video, but MAN, that guys' voice & the cadence he talks at, about drove me to have a 'DRINK'! Like I said, the info is good, this guy sounds like he is on crank! JMO

Agreed, and in his video on the 357 Sig, he even allows something is not being captured in their testing. Well, if all one looks for is penetration, and most bullets are designed to achieve FBI standards, regardless of energy, then all they will see is penetration is the same regardless of power. They are starting with the conclusion and then developed tests to to prove what they already decided.

To be clear, I am not saying they're wrong about what they do say -- they aren't -- it's what they fail to test or say with which I have an issue. Anybody who's been hit by a soccer ball hard and had the wind knocked out of them knows even that small amount of energy, with no permanent damage whatsoever, understands energy applied to the torso can be devastating: causing disorientation, loss of breath, loss of equilibrium, loss of sight, temporary disruption of blood flow. ...and those are just soccer balls.

I am not suggesting there is such a thing as a bullet that will literally knock a determined attacker hyped on jungle juice down. What I am saying is that such hits increase psychological stops and sometimes physiologically disrupt the attacker for several seconds. It is a marginal advantage. If a shooter's hit probability drops with the more potent cartridge, than the tradeoff is a losing proposition and they should stick to what they can shoot well.
I don't know, But a 12ga 00buck or a 1 1/8oz slug, either with a MV of 1450fps+ WILL knock em down! If it doesn't? Then they ain't human. But the 'Coup DeGrass' is if they go down & even try to get back up to continue? REPEAT The Above!! Don't 'Play' with crazy/demented/evil, End IT!
