XRay 3 sights for P229 Dark Elite?

840 Views 18 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  AzMaz
I bought a P229 Dark Elite a few moths ago. I sent it in to Sig Sauer for their Service package and to have the sights upgraded to the Xray 3 sights. I got a call back today saying that the could not upgrade the sights to XRay 3 because it was an older model P229. I explained that I had read on the forums that guys had installed XRays by filling down the sights. He stated that Sig could not "jerry rig" the sights to fit. He also said that the front sight was a #6 and the rear sight was #8.

I read through several old post and some people said that they were able to install XRay 3 sights with no filing and some said they did have to file the sights others said that the only sights that would fit were the Dawson Precesion sights.
Is there a definitive answer?

To those of you that have a Dark Elite what was your experience with new sights?
This is my 1st Sig Sauer and I really like it. The sights are the only thing that need to be replaced. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Good question. I was just holding my P220 ED yesterday wondering the same thing. Will Sig replace the sights with a new set equal to the originals or too old?

I have a P226 Elite Dark, and I used a set from Dawson Precision to replace the factory sights. I much prefer them to the original sights.

Can you post a picture of the Dawson sights?

I cannot comment, due to the point, that I have never examined an Elite Slide with the OEM adjustable sights, to measure the dovetails. Over time, I have asked for measurements, but never received a response.

I have normally answered those with questions, to contact Dawson Precision, since they advertise "replacements", even though fixed.

I know there are self proclaimed experts, who say that the dovetails are all alike in dimensions.

I would like to install the XRay 3 sights if possible because 1, I like the look of them and 2, I prefer night sights over regular or fiber optic sights.

I know it's difficult to measure dovetails. In this case, the angles would likely be the same, so either depth, or width would be the difference. Considering that, using an older Von Stavenhagen rear, you could use feeler gauge stock, to determine the difference, and actually shim the dovetail, so the XRay 3 rear would fit. Of course, it's unfortunate the rear sight doesn't have a set screw, to help tighten it in the dovetail.

I have a P229 Dark Elite in 357Sig build date1/24/19 purchased 8/20 that did not come with adjustable sights

The critical question isn't answered though, about size, nor a photo to ascertain if it actually ever had the adjustable sights, on that particular Slide.
I had called night fission to see if they do a set for my 226 dark elite, they referred me to Dawson, They said they did vials for some of Dawson sights, the rep also mentioned the rear sight is taller than other models and told me to call Dawson…..
I haven’t ordered yet as I also was looking for an alternative.

The Dark Elite had a somewhat unique adjustable rear sight. Dawson is your best bet for a custom sight install.

So, Dawson are the ONLY sight options for the Sig Elite Dark pistols? No Sig options at all?
