X Ten rattle?

2023 Views 22 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  marathonrunner
I just picked up my X Ten from the FFL I had it shipped to. I noticed what seemed like a lot of play between the slide and frame. I asked and the dealer let me check it against another P320 (9mm compact) to see if it was normal. Mine was noticeably more. In fact, if I rotate my hand back and forther quickly, I can even hear it rattle. Normal? Something you'd bother Sig over? I have not shot the pistol yet AND I am coming off of a 1911 so any poly is gonna seem a little loose BUT I have a Gen5 G19 on me, right now, and it doesn't have that much play in between the slide and frame. So..... did I get an oops?

Perfectly normal. Just load the magazine (with our without rounds) and the rattling goes away. Great 10mm, you will enjoy shooting it.

No, it doesn't 😞

I just checked it again. It does reduce it but, with a (almost) full mag inserted, you just have to shake your hand a little harder to hear it. With the mag inserted, you can also grab the slide with the other hand and move it more than my G19, my M&P 2.0 BUT a comparable amount to my CZ P10c which is a great pistol. So.... maybe I'm alright. I it will be a week before I can test it. If it prints sub 3" @ 25yd from a rest, then it can't be that big an issue, just makes it feel pretty cheap. I'm gonna dig up my P250 and see how it was.

I have the same issue, spoke with Sig CS, they told me it was normal. None of my other striker fire pistols have anything close to this much play. What have you found out?

Nothing yet. The first time I contacted them (and sent requested video), I was told it was "normal". I emailed them again and told the CS rep that I would be emailing another video to look at and that it is not "normal" with any other mfg OR any other Sig P320 I've felt. I didn't send the video until Friday afternoon. I'm not expecting much over the weekend, figure I should hear something Tuesday.

FWIW, I have two P320s (chambered in 9mm) and a P365XL. None of them 'rattle' when shaken, whether with a full mag or empty.

Nor does my M&P 10mm, unless I shake it really hard.

FWIW, the X5 Legion is known for rattling. Don’t worry about it.

Neither does my P250. Heck, the Poly80 I slapped together doesn't.

You say "with a full mag or empty", what about no mag?

That's interesting, thanks.

Thanks for the reply! I sent an email out to Sig and will gladly send them a video showing how I can physically move the slide laterally back and forth regardless of magazine in or out. Keep us updated on what they say if you don’t mind, and I’ll do the same.

Thanks for the info! It’s not that I’m “worried” about it exactly, I just expect it to be similar as other striker fired pistols I own. More specifically, I bought this to carry in the backcountry and I’m not sure if I have the personality type to ignore a rattle with every step I take while hiking/walking. It’s pretty annoying to be honest and I just have higher expectations for the cost and just in general.

Definitely good to know though that the X5 Legion has some similar issues. You would think that Sig’s quality assurance would want some tighter tolerances on one of their flagship models but maybe it’s just one of the quirks due to the design of the firearm? I’m definitely nowhere close to being a mechanical engineer but it just seems off.

It's pretty odd that the X-5 Legion is known for having a rattle, when my Legion Carry doesn't have one at all.

Regardless, a 10mm pistol should feel solid. Maybe it's just my utter lack of faith, but I don't imagine a brand new 10mm pistol with a loose fitment is going to improve on a steady diet of full-power 10mm loads.

THIS! Am I worried the pistol is going to come apart in my hand? No. Do I think any firearms mfg should call this "normal"? Uh..... Lorcin maybe?

It seems pretty simple to me - either the rails on the FCU are machined down too much or the grooves that they ride in (on the slide) are milled out too big.

Absolutely! I will let y'all know exactly how they address it.

If they do agree that a brand new pistol should not have that much play and fix the issue, I'm sold - Sig sticker on the car, sell me a hat and at least one T Shirt. They will be my new CZ lol

You are saying that when you put your gun in a well fitting holster it rattles when you walk?
I've shot a rattly Colt 1911 that was incredibly accurate and reliable. If rattle really bothers you, there is a solution. Dip gun in super glue and let dry. Rattle no more.

Well unfortunately I don’t have a holster that will fit it, I’m waiting on CrossBreed to make one for the X-Ten - there are only a few holsters available currently. I’m being speculative, but the example I own, if the holster doesn’t tightly compress the slide and the polymer grip module together, it will for sure rattle. The tip of the slide/barrel is shifting side to side and tapping the polymer grip module at the tip of the pistol. It’s almost like it’s as if they were not made 100% for each other. I can wiggle it back and forth quite a bit. Just carrying it around in my hand will definitely rattle while walking.

I examined an X-Five at the range/store that I’m a member at today, the X-Five had very little movement in comparison to my X-Ten example. The movement it had would be my expectation for the X-Ten.

Update - received an email back from Sig (like I guessed - Tuesday). Upon reviewing the second set of videos, they still consider it "normal".

Looks like that's it.

I will try to get some videos up here soon.
