Wrong Place/Right Time!

Yesterday, 5/21/22 the wife and I went into our local AT&T office to pay phone bill. Store was empty except for 1 young lady standing there apparently looking for an employee, after standing there for a minute or two my wife asked her if she worked there, the lady said no. My wife then proceeded to the back office door which was locked to find an employee. I immediately got suspicious, something just didn't seem right, I told both the ladies something's wrong we need to leave. Just as the three of us were heading towards the front door four police officers guns in hand pointed directly inside the store appeared, fortunately they were reasonable and didn't panic, apparently we didn't seem to be a threat. They cleared us from the store, had us wait around the corner while they cleared the interior. Within a couple of minutes five or six more police appeared. The four police officers that went inside the store shortly came out with an employee hogtied and duct taped! When speaking to officers outside they said their response was 3 minutes, the wife and I are both CCW, the way I see it five minutes earlier on our part would have been WRONG PLACE/WRONG TIME! Nobody really knows how they'll react in those situations when they come, yesterday I was glad I didn't have to find out! Nobody was really hurt, thank God for that! Other than losing an hour of our day on police reports everything turned out fine.

Wow wrong place right time indeed. I'd be paying my bill on line next time. :)

Last time I was phone shopping, the AT&T store I went to had an off duty but uniformed
officer in the store and he was VERY visible. He looked bored out of his mind, but
he was hard to miss. Damn shame it's come to that...........

Glad that nobody was killed, phone store robberies seem to be popular and as smart as phones are it’s unacceptable that the manufacturer can’t turn them into a brick 2 minutes after they’re reported as stolen.

Years ago in the city next to where I grew up, a police officer stopped by a interior design/ paint store while on duty and in uniform since it was in his patrol zone. Unknown to him the store was in the process of an armed robbery by several suspects. He was fatally shot as he walked over to the counter area. Timing is everything, situational awareness is paramount but nothing is guaranteed.

I'm curious, were you both carrying, and did you identify yourself to the officers as carrying (if you were) or keep mum?

There was more than one robber it seems. At least one to tie up the employee and one or more to steal the phones. The employee was able to hit a panic button it seems and apparently the robber(s) knew that time was short! It also sounds like this wasn't the first phone store robbery the cops had responded to.

Kept mum at first, but after they ran our IDs one of them returned and asked if we were carrying, obviously the system showed we were CCW.

Also there is this, that is not the regular AT&T store we go to. The store that's closer to our house that we use last month had the whole storefront crashed in during the middle of the night, when we went to that store on Saturday storefront was repaired with unarmed clearly Mark security guard. That security guard told us they were very busy and would be about a 20-minute wait to pay our bill, and suggested we went to the other store! Needless to say when we return to the original store around an hour later I was very happy to thank him for sending us to the robbery!

Wild @Leeeagle! Heart rate jumped just reading the story. Glad it was a non-issue and I’ll humbly challenge that you were exactly where you needed to be; right place right time. It simply wasn’t your time to be forced to engage - always the ideal position to be in.

BTW, the wife a I bills are paid automatically, however the mother-in-law(86 Y/O) does not believe in and or understand these things, therefore once a month we drive around town with either cash or handwritten checks to pay her bills, it's a bit of a pain in the arss, but I'm sure most of you understand what Mama wants Mama gets!!!!!!

I agree 100%.

Just because one has a CCW permit and a gun, does not make them a LEO. I will not engage, unless the threat directly affects me or someone with me. Fortunately, I have never been in a situation that would justify pulling a gun. Hopefully, I never will.

One must always be aware of their situation at all times, especially now days.

That is spot-on. I feel exactly the same way. I have trained the wife vigorously in those protocols! It's not our job to save the world.

Why would you? I'm sure laws vary by State, but here in ND there's no legal obligation to inform law enforcement upon contact that you're licensed and carrying. (There is a duty to inform if carrying under Constitutional Carry.) I sure as **** wouldn't volunteer that info under most circumstances where I'm likely to come into direct contact with a LEO since sometimes cops get twitchy around other people who are armed.

glad you guys are alright and no one was hurt. We just had a shooting in my area yesterday at our local walmart due to a suspect being stopped over him possibly shoplifting. , 1 civilian and 1 greeter was shot and 1 subject died on scene. This is such a tragedy and should not have happened over some phones. Suspect was caught hours later. This world is turning very badly anymore and I don't think it will be getting any better anytime soon.

SO< yes to the original poster, I am glad you missed this incident and you and the wife did not have to endure any of that because it could have been very bad if the situation turned deadly.
Thank you for the flowers. The wife and I are both Tough Enough to withstand most of this BS! What really scares me in today's Times is if you engage in self-defense is what the media does to you!
