For those who use a suppressor on your home defense pistol, what do you use? My bedside setup is currently a P229 Legion with a laser and light. I don’t want to start a huge debate about suppressor vs not suppressed (either the indoors point made by the Warrior Poet Society video or otherwise), but I’m still on the fence due to the added length when in use and for storage, and that I might need to take different steps for securing it(as an NFA item) vs just the pistol. Anyway, I’ve got a threaded barrel but I’ve not yet added a can (I’m considering an Osprey 45), so I’m open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance

All valid concerns, and I share them.

I have threaded barrels for P320 XFull and P226 Mk25, and I have a P220 Carry I could add a barrel to. I’m considering a Sig can or Rugged Obsidian 9 or 45. AFA storage, I have a small closet safe anchored to studs in the back wall. The last thing I do before I get in bed is get the Mk25 out of the safe, take off my watch and lay the gun down on the bedside table, hot and decocked. First thing I do when I get up - before I hit the head - is lock the gun back in the safe.

Dedicating the safe to only that weapon will permit storage with a can attached, and keeping the NFA papers in that safe permanently, with the gun and can, would be satisfactory diligence I think. I’ll check on that before I order a can.

A range can would be a different story.

That’s what I was thinking. But it adds a bit more of a procedure - and one more thing for me to forget! But there are trade-offs for everything.

I've been using a P229 R 40, with Crimson Trace, Light and Osprey can for years. My border collie escorts me to the safe when it's time - she knows. Reverse trip in the morning, with Sadie leading the way.

my only concern would be if i could store it safely and still be able to access it quickly.
of course others may be less concerned and leave it on a bedside table when they are home (or wherever).

i can understand that hearing damage could be a concern, in the unlikely case that you will fire shots in a closely confined area in your home. unfortunately this is not even an option, although perhaps we can appeal to judge benitez to allow nfa items like suppressors here.

Just curious...are you afraid of waking people if you need to use gun? Why suppressed for home defense.
It's all about hearing protection . . . that is, trying to protect what little I have left, my high frequency hearing is gone. When I wear hearing aids, I can actually hear birds chirping.

You need to be able to speak to your attorney or Carry Insurer, the Police, and EMT’s iimmediately after a defensive shooting event. The can will allow you to hear on the telephone vs. having to wait 30 minutes.

This is a crazy request, but humor me. Have someone take a picture of your hand, holding your set up, laying flat on a bedside table. I just need to see the size in reference to the space it will be laying in wait. I just can’t wrap my head around that much length, in a worst day of my life scenario. An AR with a can makes sense to me because if I’m grabbing an AR, it’s the end of the world as I know it. On the chance that someone breaches my security, and catches both of us sound asleep while he makes it to the bedroom, I'm probably already dead.

Your CT grips with a light are similar to my set up. I have the same combo at my Daughters house.

I agree. I would want everbody in the house to know there was a problem. Further. the length added to a pistol by a can would make it that much easier for somebody to grab it. I can put up with my ears ringing for a day or two after two or four unsuppressed rounds.

Well in that case get one on your carry gun also. Good plan.

You need to be able to hear the others and they need to hear you.
If your concerned about any weapon being taken from you then get some training, those few inches are not a make or break deal.
The ringing may not go away, I took an ear plug out in 1986 so I could hear my spotter while on the M2, the ringing has never stopped, don't assume it will.
I always can when I can.

I am always amused by those who wish to engage in public discourse by erecting fences.

Fair point. I don’t mind the discourse at all, especially if new points are made. But I was just hoping that- within a subset of possible replies - that folks would say “your Osprey sucks compared to x” etc. If one ignores my first sentence, then the replies just are not as helpful to me and my question. FWIW I was swayed initially by the WPS point, but my hearing sucks and I’ve also suffered a recent TBI, so I’m more attuned to stuff I cared less about before. So if someone says “you shouldn’t use a suppressor at all” that’s ok, it’s just not responsive to my post.
