Springfield "U" shape rear sights

2366 Views 26 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  hardybronson954
I recently noticed Springfield is using a new "U" shaped rear sight
on some of their pistols to include the Hellcat and some 1911's.

The pitch is these are not for precision shooting, rather it allows
you to quickly and instinctively get on target.

Anyone used these? I can't decide if it's helpful or distracting.
If it's just about quickly getting on target I'd say helpful.

I've used them. They are ok, but I'd rather just have a hi-viz front and a blacked out rear for those purposes.

I’ve used them. If you want to hit the 10 ring use different sights. But if you want to to quickly put a bunch of shots in to the 8 and 9 rings then they are great.

I don't see much difference between these and the Glock sights that everyone hates. Springfield does have a better front sight though.

That makes sense. Quick acquisition.

Right. The sight picture isn't that bad, but I could see where someone might
want to black out the rear sight.

I blacked-out mine too .. so that I can concentrate the Front sight to the POI ..

I love them, they are my favorite sights for a carry gun. By far these are the easiest for me to pick up quickly.

I agree with you 💯. They aren’t anything special, but I also admit I have my own biases.

The question is (and I looked around) who makes these sights? Springfield doesn't say which leads me
to think they're proprietary.

Yeah, I haven't seen them available. If they are available for other guns I'd like to know as well. I have three pistols in my carry rotation...the Hellcat, an HK P30SK, and a CZ PCR. I'd put these sights on the other two if I could.

In doing my search I came across these too. I saw these at the NRA exhibit but only glanced at them. Wish I would have checked them
out more thoroughly. Apparently very well received.

Hate to bump an old thread..... but

Shot a Hellcat today, and I love the U rear sight..... Reminded me of when I shot Glocks, and I like their rear sight as well..... It just works for me...

Anyone seen any aftermarket U sight on the market?

Not Springfield but I have "U" notch sights on most of my handguns. I find it much easier & faster to get a proper sight picture. It's not overly precise but for combat distance +, they work great!

Long ago there was a site called 10-8 Performance. They sold stuff for 1911’s, Glocks, and a few Smitths. I bought a set of their front and rear sights for my S&W Shield, which the smith installed for free because I also bought the complete Apex kit for that gun too.

The Apex kit made that little gun shoot like a dream, but then I come from the bullseye side. But the sight was U-shaped and a touch wider (0.156”). I kept the white dot front sight and found that the “ball” just settled into the notch soooo naturally that the little gun was actually fun to shoot at silhouettes.

So check out 10-8 Performnce. See if they carry a sight for your weapon. I do believe they were the first to make them.

I'm not a fan of mine. I plan on replacing the sights with the standard 3 dot night sights. i want all my weapons to have the same sight configuration, unless i do something silly and get a red dot

To each their own. Personally, I really like these sights and have no trouble hitting what I aim at at 7 yds. Can’t say they’re quicker but they’re certainly not slower. I feel they enable me to get a finer bead on target than Glock standard and traditional three dot sights.

I recently bought an XDm in 10MM, it has the U-Notch rear sight too. The POA and POI were perfect, right from the start. However I put a Vortex Viper RDS and the low profile sights became useless. I didn't see that they were better or worse than square notch sights.
