I have a 1987 West German P226. It's in pretty good shape and spent most of it's life in a safe. I don't know the round count but I'd estimate it's under 1000. I changed out the recoil spring just to make sure. I've seen that the other springs and parts go for 10,000-20,000+ rds before scheduled maintainance. Anyways, I'm having a tough decision about sending it in for the SSP maintainance. It's a decent deal with the sights but I'm not thrilled with Sig sights and I don't mind the stock ones. Also was considering getting the slide refinished while it's in there. So it's now a $300 trip. I can swap all the springs myself for $50 and 15 mins. So do I send it in and get it certified and restored back to new or should I just let it ride until the wheels fall off?!

If you are sure of the round count, I wouldn't spend the money to send it in. If you bought it used, and aren't sure of the round count, get the parts kit and definitely do it yourself. It is too easy and the kit is too cheap not to do it for "insurance". If you want to get the slide refinished, just send that in for just that job.

Last summer, I sent my ‘88 P226 in for the service plan. I bought it new but was unsure of the round count; it sat idle for ~30 years in my closet. When I resumed shooting in mid-‘17, it worked perfectly and I suspect that it had plenty of remaining life on its original springs.

But to pay $85 for a detailed strip, cleaning, parts inspection, and replacement of all springs (far beyond that of the basic parts kit), that is an easy price to pay for the resulting peace of mind. Even if you are inclined to self perform the work, you’d have a difficult time sourcing all of the springs for $85. And, I think Sig had the gun back in my hands within 10 days.

I opted to stick with my original bar-dot sights, rather than choose the service plan + Siglite install combo. But the CS rep instead offered an SRT kit for $50 installed. Thus, they might offer a similar discount on a combo of service plan & slide re-bluing.

On the other hand, I recently bought a used (LEO trade) 220 DAK and opted to self perform the conversion to DA/SA and SRT. I really didn’t save any money in comparison to getting the Custom Shop to perform that work. But it gave me a worthwhile COVID project.
