1005 Views 16 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  BloodyThumb
I have a Sig-Sauer P-229 9mm #45A008663.
What type/model magazine will fit ?
I have located P-229 9mm E-2 magazines (15 rounds). Will these fit my Pistol ?

Thank you,
Jimmy

Yes. The serial number verifies it is the latest generation.
The mags or also referred to as P229-1, and will have that on the magazine's body.

We always appreciate photos too! As GBIA already answered your question, but a photo of your magazine, would have made it simpler.

Check Osage County Guns, as they have had about the best pricing on the P229-1 9mm Sig Sauer Magazines, or if you are looking for a little more capacity, look at the Mec Gar 17 round AFC Magazines, at Greg Cote LLC.

Well, that can only mean one thing. Your P229 was built on the older frame that only uses the P228/old P229(9) mag.
Does your P229 have half serrations (Legacy slide)?

That's why I mentioned photos always help. GBIA evidently was going off your serial number, which essentially is the same prefix as my P229 ESE in 9mm which uses the P229-1, as well as my M11A1, which again uses the P229-1 Magazines.

But then again, as 12131 mentioned, your pistol must be based on another frame, that's why photos always help, so misidentification can be limited a little more.

That's super odd that your new P229/9 has the smaller magwell.

That’s why I asked if his had the legacy slide, which still uses the original 9mm P228/229 frame.

That really has no direct influence, as Slides can be swapped. I was once under that impression, but I have this original P229R in .357 Sig, that I have installed a Legacy 9mm Slide onto, but also swapped Locking Inserts to support the Slide and earlier barrel. But the frame still accepts P229-1Magazines... since it had been a .357/.40 previously.

Although this is a "FrankenSig", when you buy used, you never know until you check personally, what you actually are getting. This was originally a .357 Sg DAK...

Strange, I’ve tried to swap slides on my 2020 legacy 9mm with my early 2000s 357 legacy slide. The 9mm slide wouldn’t fit the 357 frame rails.
Likely it was Locking Insert interference and not the rails, the early 9mm insert is lower in profile, due to the shorter height of the Slide itself.

External frame dimensions are the same (minus the point on the trigger guard and the rail on the -R versions).

Here is pic to help identifying what frame you have. Short arrows on the 229-1 point to the area that they remove metal off the inner walls, making the mag well wider to accommodate the wider body 229-1 mag. The 228/M11B/old P229(9) mag well is smaller, since there is no metal removal.

A different pic to better visualize the metal cutout area. This compares the stainless frame P228s made from 2 different frames (229-1 vs true 228).

I didn’t try hard to make it fit, I just made one attempt. I weighed the 2 guns and there is a 3+ ounce difference without a magazine. Of course 9mm being lighter.
After the switch over to the long external extractor slide / 229-1 frame guns in late 2009-start 2010, the Legacy slide guns (with original narrow mag well) were still being intermittently made over a period of several years, as late as 2019 that I'm aware of, because I used to have one, a Classic Carry (E29-9-CC-LGCY) that is serial numbered 55E020281, born on 05-FEB-2019. So, it's not at all strange that OP's gun happens to have the narrow mag well frame.

Btw, can anyone make any sense out of SIG USA serial numbering system for the 229? Just look at the serial number list stickied at top of this subforum, and you see that the numbers are all over the place and do not really follow logical sequence.

Examples:

45A born after 55B
55B066XXX; 01 AUG 2016; E29R-9-LEGION; Thanks to ExMany
45A046xxx; 12-AUG-2016; WE29-9-BSS-LGCY; Thanks to glock35ipsc

55B born after 55E
55E010xxx; 28-APR-2018; E29R-9-Sel.
55B061xxx; 11-FEB-2019; E29-9-CC-LGCY; Thanks to CubedWarrior

It has always seemed to me that this type of situation is a lot more common with SIG than other companies.

Some form of it has come up on my early MCX before I traded it (springs, pins), my MPX (springs and mags), springs on my older and newer 226s not being completely compatible, and there is this with my 229 and mags. My lone 229 was never an issue for me as it is very late production so I can use either mag if I don't mind the 13rd mags being a bit loose.

It took me a while to find a decocker lever spring for my old all German 226 because I wanted to keep the original grips! The spring changed at some point and the grips were changed as well. Either spring will work as long as the grips are right.... unless it is Tuesday and it is raining.

Every time I think about buying a SIG I have to wonder how long it will be before they make some change and parts becomes an issue.
