SIG P322 Threaded barrel misstep

7476 Views 20 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  cremaley
Picked up a new P322 couple weeks ago & really like it Put Talon grips & a Holosun 507k on it.
Just one thing I don't like about it- the decision by SIG to use a threaded adapter instead of a straight threaded barrel.
As someone who will shoot it suppressed 100% of the time, I quickly found out that once you remove the thread protector,
screw on the adapter, tighten it with a wrench - the gun CANNOT be field stripped again without that wrench AND the thread protector on hand - since :

1) Slide will not come off until you wrench off the threaded adapter.
2) The originally installed thread protector MUST then be put back on to retain the recoil spring & washer to disassemble.

Lousy design - a simple threaded barrel with a thread protector would have been 100% better. WHY??

I wondered the same thing. Makes the gun look cheap.

S&W did the same thing with their M&P 22 Compact. There are probably others like it as well but those are the only two I'm familiar with.

It is cheap..

It is what it is, the design is captured barrel and to keep the slide on it needs something to keep it on.
Not a new concept - the S & W MP 22 Compact uses the same design with a thread-on adapter which must be removed to disassemble the slide.
Not yet having one... what about the threaded piece makes it so the slide cannot come off?

The S&W / Walther team used it on the Walther p22 when it came out it 2001

True, but FN managed to engineer a standard threaded barrel on their new 502 Tactical. SIG could have done this as well. PIA if field stripping is needed at the range or in the field without a wrench & thread protector handy.

Then put together a toolkit - it's a good idea to always have an assortment of tools for any 'just in case' situation. I have 95% of what I might need stored in a .30 cal. ammo can every time I go to the range.

I will add needed items to my range bag. But of course if every gun needed a different tool & parts to field strip - I'd have one hell of a heavy bag. Still think it's a crappy design choice.

Since we switched to Sig Sauer with P320 full, P320 M18, P365, we have gotten use to their trigger and wanted to purchase the P322. However, Delaware Governor encouraged the stupid politicians to pass a mess of anti gun bills and any firearm with a Threaded Barrel is now Illegal in Delaware. Called Sig and asked if any plain barrels will be offered and they said, NO because only two states have made the P322 illegal.
The Colt/Walther 1911 22s are the same too. If you want to use a suppressor the wrench is needed to remove the adapter.
When I was at the range today the shooter next to me had a P322. He liked it a lot. He did say he had some light strikes.
I handled it but didn't shoot it.
I have one coming in the next couple of weeks. I hope I like it. It will be the lightest and smallest semi .22 I own.

Regardless of what the Tarus haters say about their quality people are comparing .22 semi pistols to the TX22!
I made a pretty handy tool for this that I carry with my 322. I figure somebody will mass produce some sort of tool soon as EWK did for the M&P 22 Compact. I would show pics but don't know how to post them on here. I will send them to anybody who wants to see or can post them on here for me.

I altered this flat tool I had in a tool box that I never used. Now I can use it on four different nuts.

The colt provided a wrench.

Good idea!
Cool !! My S&W M&P 22 Compact came with a wrench too.

I'm wondering if anyone has made after-market, "normally" threaded barrel. If so, they stand to make a lot of sales. I for one, would pay up to two bills for a 4-1/4 to 4-1/2 inch standard threaded barrel. Other than the flawed barrel design, it's a great 20 round compact rim-fire pistol.

Then the existing recoil spring/bushing setup wouldn’t work, the O.D. of the 1/2x28 thread is bigger than the I.D. Of the bushing & recoil spring. You’d need a larger diameter bushing/recoil spring along with the body of the barrel being increased, which would cause the frame where the recoil spring nests to increase in size and probably necessitate a redesign of the slide to accommodate, also the barrel hole in the front slide would need to be a larger diameter too. So basically Sig would just need to redesign the gun from the frame insert forward to accommodate your perceived design flaw. Call customer service and let them know. I’ll be patiently waiting for the recall.

Definitely not a deal breaker for me.

Maybe not a design flaw since it is a fully functional pistol, so let's call it a "poor design." I like it, but I shouldn't need a 7/16 and 9/16 wrench to field strip any pistol.
