SIG P229 Legion recoil spring deformation / replacement recommendations

883 Views 15 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  TacoJoe
Hello all,

Would appreciate advice as to:

1. Recommended recoil spring replacement i.e. per rounds fired.

2. Spring is bent off centre from last third of the spring length. (Stretch I guess due to use)

Have put 6,900 rds through this amazing pistol without almost a glitch.

SIG Sauer’s recommended maintenance and parts replacement schedule
(as of March 2008):

Decocking lever spring: 10,000
Extractor: 20,000
Extractor spring: 20,000
Firing pin: 20,000
Firing pin spring: 20,000
Magazine spring: When magazine fails to lock the slide open. *
Recoil spring: 5,000 †
Safety lock spring: 20,000
Slide catch lever spring: 10,000
Takedown lever: 20,000
Trigger bar spring: 10,000

I had seen an early recommendation here that the recoil spring be replaced after 3000 rounds, and that’s what I follow.

good time to recommend a parts kit on hand, before they figure out how to make getting parts harder too.

So it looks like we should all have an extra spring on hand as the earliest replacement part, especially for any pistol we have purchased used. (Two of my Sigs were purchased used, so I’m going to get a spring for my 45 P320 and MK25.)

Sorry - old anal retentive habit - what’s the asterisk note?

This is my rule too for anything I carry or is used in a SD role. On these SD guns I throw the 5000 miles springs in a dedicated plastic bag which I keep in my range bag. If simply a range fun gun I let it roll longer and carry the aforementioned baggy full of springs 5000 mile springs just in case a range gun spring hits the end of the road.

Sorry for the newb question - but it seemed that Sig sells recoil slide assemblies, and just the springs - but not necessarily just the springs for every model. Is this just something where I buy the right color-coded weight and cut to match the length?

You can always buy parts kits which include the spring or buy just the springs alone. Each Sig has a dedicated spring (color coded). They are often sold in 3 packs. Stock up. Sooner or later, you will need them, and if not, easily sold.

ftl:
* I also recommend replacing the magazine spring when ammunition is not held securely. This can occur before slide lock failures.

Embarrassing additional newb question - ftl = For the Ladies? I’m hoping more like Failure to Load/Launch. FTL
