Sig cross, 308 and the wait for the 277

Hey all,
I am a new member (ish) but starting to get back into rifle shooting more and more. I shot competitions for years with both rifle and pistols and have been through several military shooting schools but I am primarily a bow hunter now since once you can close into 20-40 yards with a bow, 300 yards with a rifle feels like cheating. I have become interested in a sig cross though for a new rifle for the range or plinking and having fun. My question comes into caliber. For a general shooting, having fun rifle, one that can be used up to elk if I ever wanted to rifle hunt again would you go with the .308 win or wait for the 277 fury to hit the shelves? (And would be REALLY interested if someone has any info when that might happen).
This rife will be suppressed and used with both a 1-10 Tango for fun shooting and a 3-18 if I decided to hunt with it.

So I take it no one has any info on when the .277 will be available in the cross?
It's less the rifle than the ammo. And when the ammo is available it's $80 MSRP even on sigs website. Although several people post there that the stocked up on the ammo and are waiting for the rifle.

I've seen 2 boxes of ammo and one rifle. The Sig (Hunting?) Games used a bunch and I gusee what ever high pressure ammo they didn't give to the military.

Personally I'd rather they make a 6.8 western bolt and barrel for the Cross. Less PSI about same performance

There is a much more reasonable 227 Fury FMJ round available. The Hybrid variety is a bit pricy for informal range work. Be interesting to see how much is shot at the Freedom Day event for those trying out the new military submissions.
The affordable and available FMJ round is the standard pressure round. Which defeats the purpose of .277 fury/6.8gpc.
58-62k psi vs 80k psi which is a drastically slower round. Essentially thats 270-08 or 270 winchester vs 270WSM or 6.8 Western.

Low pressure round negates the point of the Fury. Should Just get 308 or Creedmore at that point.

The ammo prices don’t worry me too much, my favorite rifle is a .458 Lott and if you think $80 a box is high check out those prices. The reason I really wanted the .277 fury was to get that 150gr load at around 2850 out of a 16in barrel. You get 270 Win performance (remember that most 270 Win ammo is rated at 24in barrel but most coke with a 22 inch barrel). I would be perfectly happy with that, it’s just the rifles aren’t available and looking like they won’t be in time for the 2022 season. I did end up with the .308 win Cross and using the 165gr Sig Elite tipped I get really close to the 2680fps out of a suppressed 16in barrel. That matches up well with the 1X10 Sig tango and the reticle in it. The larger frontal area of the 30 cal will help on larger game and although I like to plink at distance I can’t image a game animal in the world I can’t close to 300 yards on. So this setup is pretty handy. I have attached a few pics of the setup here.

Do you not think you could get the same velocity out of a 270 wsm or 6.8 western in 16 inch baravailable. Only 3/4 the pressure. I do know the cross isn't available in short mags. The one round I would have like to have seen was the 6.8-284 win that didn't make it to the finals. It was just about on par with 6.8 western/270wsm.

Hopefully both the real fury ammo and rifles are available again in the next few years, and hopefully they lower the price and Sami it. But I do think they won't be able to Sami at those pressures. Low pressure ammo just ain't worth it with 308 and 6.5 creedmore availble.

I do think that around 2850 would be do-able in a 270 WSM, but since the Cross isn’t offered in it it didn’t really matter. The 150gr elite tipped hunter is available from Sig’s website last I checked (though could be sold out by now) but it would be great if there were more offerings from different companies. I do think the Cross is pretty handy and fun to pack around and shoot. I am mostly 99% of the time a bow hunter and haven’t rifle hunter in almost 2 decades now but still like to think someday I will start again. I spent a lot of my childhood in a ballistics laboratory and my fondness for firearms started there so any new caliber or technology peaks my interest for sure. I think the Furry would be awesome to shoot and play with.
The only way diffrent ammo from diffrent companies will be available is 270-08 standard pressure ammo, since 277 fury/6.8gpc is a propriatary non SAMI round unfortunately.

I'd really like to See sig release a short mag, long mag cross and a 223 lengt

h cross.
