Selecting a 5" .45 1911 in 2022

Need some suggestions in selecting a first-time 1911.

The premise of this thread is that I need a .45 ACP for a particular competition (bowling pin shooting) type. The rules stipulate a 5" gun with iron sights. Most competitors use a 1911 in .45, but some opt for 10mm. As a long time Glock shooter, I have never had the "1911 experience". This gun will not be carried, but will be taken out of the safe to be admired, and shot occasionally. I am left handed.

My budget is approximately $1,000, +/-$100. As mentioned, this needs to be a 1911, in .45 ACP, with a 5" barrel and iron sights.

Doing some research on this, pistols on my short list include:

Springfield Armory Loaded(*) sku PX9151LCA
Ruger SR1911 model 6700
Colt Series 70 Competition O1070CCS
S&W E Series model no. 108482
Rock Island Armory Pro Series Ultra Match 5" sku 51434 (*)

* = Ambi Safety

I'm open to new or used, as long as it is within my price range.

Are there any other pistol manufacturer's I'm missing off the above list?

For context, I borrowed a .45 from a friend and shot at what is called the "Pin Shoot" in Central Lake MI a couple weeks ago. Here is a video to give you an idea of the type of match this is.

The Colt or Springer are the two best options in that price range.

Of the ones listed I'd go with the Colt or Springfield.

I would look at BUL Armory. Their prices are reasonable, within your budgeted amount, and I have yet to feel a factory 1911 trigger as smooth the BUL. I currently own Colt, Kimber, and SIG 1911s, and the BUL equals or surpasses them. If I was in the market for a 1911 Government competition pistol, my first choice would be BUL.

One small detail option I'd make sure it has. Is front and rear sights on a dovetail. I would not buy one with a fixed front sight. Along with a rear adjustable sight if only going to be used on the range target or bowling pin shooting.
Whatever you choose, buy it from a shop where you can handle the individual pistol you're considering before you purchase it.

Make sure it's an all steel, and preferably forged steel M1911a1 pistol. Check it for fit, finish, the trigger and the slide to frame precision fit. There should only be smooth operation with no play.

Many of these continue to be hand fit pistols, and there is quite a bit of variation from pistol to pistol within a manufacturer's models and lines. Some are better than others.

Your budget limits you somewhat. My preference for factory pistols is Dan Wesson's line, but you're looking at more money there. A used Colt or Springfield may come in to your budget. Watch for wear.

Nothing on your list would be a bad choice. I have a couple of Springfields, a Ruger, the aforementioned Bul, and I used to have a Rock Island. They can all be excellent shooters. The current generation of Springfields is getting very good reviews, but even the older ones were good value for money.

Whatever you get, shoot it and get to know it. They’re definitely a bit different than Tupperware guns!

Increase your budget a few hundred and get a Colt gold cup, national match or Trophy. Does it have to be 45? 9mm or 38 super will get you back on target faster. Colt will retain value.. keep that in mind. Make sure you get a series 70 style, not an 80.

There are so many people there that buy and sell perfectly clean 1911s. You’ll find the best deal there. You’ll find a Dan Wesson, Colt or Springfield that sold for more when new that is being sold within your price range. All the members there as long as they’ve been there a while are solid stand up folks.

My Springfield Loaded has been great. The SR1911 in my experience has been great too. Can't go wrong with either, and you'll have money leftover for ammo.

Yes.

A 9mm will not knock the 3.5 lb bowling pins to the ground, which is required. Most use .45 ACP or 10mm.
Thanks all. I appreciate the suggestions.
Bul Armory 1911 Government
They far surpass any 1911 in their price range
I like it better and shoot it better than my 2013 Dan Wesson Specialist. Trigger breaks better than a German MasterShop X5 outta the box. No chit
At leat mine does. Mine breaks at 3 pounds with no creep. Never had a 1911 that was so smooth..
It's far and away the easiest to field strip and especially when putting back together.
Hers the 2nd ever mag thru mine. 8 shots 230gr fmj
at 7 yards. It's just so easy to shoot. So, do what ya want but, don't discount taking a close look at Bul
Honest Outlaw said the pistol that most reminded of his 1911 Bul, was his Wilson Combat....and, I believe him.

Springfield Armory, in any of their offerings, are pretty solid.
Colt or Springfield.
I used to shoot IDPA with a Springfield loaded and it performed very well. But then there's just something about a real Colt. ;)
I used to shoot a Colt Gold Cup National Match when I shot competition. Used it in PPC. IPSC, and Bowling pin. Great accuracy and could really get the pins moving.
Yes I am old remembering PPC and IPSC. That Colt was one of the few guns I regretted selling.

Sig needs to make a series 70, commander size 1911 in 9mm. That's what I would purchase in a heartbeat. Sig needs to offer that configuration like every other serious 1911 maker is doing now. Do you hear me Sig???
For now, my Dan Wesson Vigil commander 1911 in 9mm gets the job done.
