Safety Glasses Recommendations

2009 Views 30 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  TripleD
Ok . . . don't crucify me here. I know that the most important thing is protecting our eyes while shooting. But does anyone have a recommendation for good, safety-rated shooting/safety glasses that don't make you look like a complete dork? I'm not trying to walk around in a pair of Oakleys that make me look like a pro snowboarder or a tactical wannabe. I'm just trying to find a nice pair of sunglasses that I could dress up or down, that also happen to double as great eye protection.

Take a look at your local hardware store. I found a few different types that are cheap and work well at Homedepo. I usually put them in ziplock to keep them from getting scratched up in my range bag. Most of them that have the adjustable earpiece part can fit over glasses too.
I like Gargoyles. Dirty Harry wore them.

(I am not affiliated with them. I like them because they are a tough polycarbonate)

Oh - My name is Micky, another new guy

You should be good with any polycarbonate lens on glasses.
It’s good you’re thinking about eye safety.
I sometimes use an amber colored set I picked at a LGS/range some time ago.

The Terminator had Gargoyles :)

Ignore the fashion choice, including your anti-Oakley bias. Look for EyePro that minimally meets the Ansi Z87+ Standard.

Ballistic eye protection standards.

I buy basic safety glasses from the hardware store. Whenever they're on sale I'll buy a handful of tinted and non-tinted. Usually about $6-8 @ pair. Same with hearing protection. I have at least a dozen basic earmuff type hearing protectors. I keep a bunch of eyes & ears in my gun room for when friends and family come over to shoot. The rest are in the barn to use when I'm mowing, chain sawing, sanding, etc.

I like the basic Dewalt safety glasses. Cheap, reasonably durable and they work as advertised.

Not cheap, but look at Smith sunglasses that meet the ANSI standard
I take the "who cares how I look" approach. I just use plain old yellow tinted safety glasses. Are they fashionable? No. Now if it were "cheerleader day" at the range I might try something different. :)

Take a look at Wiley X, I have the Saint with removable changeable lens. ANSI certified. They look good and are very comfortable while protecting your eyes.
So I am a tactical wannabe if I wear Oakley's? I have Oakley Si Bal M-frame Alpha W/prztr22 and clear lenses. You can get them for under $100.

I do not care how I look, I want to know I have great protection and great vision. I do have others but I am a firm believer in protecting my eyes and have on UV protecting glasses in the sun.
Looking dorky for me may be a given. Probably spent too much time at the shallow end of the gene pool. Shooting glasses aren't going to make any difference.

Depends. We need more info. Vortex hat on backwards? 5.11 tactical pants? Tribal tats? Tac folder prominently peeking out of your pocket? Danner boots? If you have any more than two of these items (including the sunglasses), then yes, you're a tactical wannabe.
I work with Gatorz eyewear and their stuff is amazing. Made in the USA and the price tag proves it. But they look good and are very functional. I use their inferno lenses which are photochromic so I can use them for indoor or outdoor ranges no matter what the lighting conditions. Hope that helps!

There are many types of shooting glasses and reasonably priced

One thing for sure, not usually recommended using glass shooting glasses for obvious reasons.
I've seen many using their regular glasses for shooting glasses.
I was unclear in my original post; I apologize for that. Let me clarify. I presently wear dorky, tacticool range glasses that meet ANSI standards. What I'm looking for are sunglasses that also look nice, without compromising protectiveness.

For those that don't mind dorky shooting glasses, more power to you. I have nothing against you. It's my personal opinion about what I personally want to wear, and I won't begrudge you yours. I'm just trying to figure out if there are glasses that both offer the requisite ballistic protection that also look good as well. If they don't exist, I'll stick with my tacticool glasses that I already use.

Checking them out now, these look like exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
