Robbed,Gun stolen

A few days ago I was in the alley behind my house and looking for my trash can since it was trash day. I spotted in the neighbors across the alley so I proceeded to go get it. (Ongoing issue)
3 people came running out and before I knew it,I was hit upside the head twice pushed to the ground and my gun fell out of the holster. Needless to say they grabbed it and took off, shot one round off.
I still don’t know how the gun came out of the holster,I was using a sticky holster since I was just running out back, normally use a retention holster.
Yesterday,by some miracle,my gun was recovered before it was used in a crime. Not sure when I’ll get it back but I learned a very hard lesson. Never use a sticky holster outside the house again. Use the retention holster.
The sticky holster is good for having it in the house, but in no way is it good for anything else.
I leave 2 firearms out when home,my 229 which is what was taken and a 365. I put whichever one I don’t carry in the safe before leaving along with everything else,I don’t even leave ammunition out.
I’ve beat myself up over this the past few days and can’t believe how damn stupid I was for not using the correct holster, even for just a short walk out in the alley.
One person was caught and the one who had my firearm is sitting in jail now.
Figured I would share this to show no matter how careful you are, things like this happen.
I knew there was no way I was going to take out 3 people rushing at me so I never considered trying and just tried getting back into my own yard and avoid the whole situation since it’s fenced in with a privacy fence and the gate was open.
Lesson learned.

Shawn156 you are very lucky. Getting your butt kicked and then your gun taken is usually much worse. Especially if it falls out on the ground as they kick your butt.
I must have a lot of HATE built up inside. If they took me down it would have been after the slide was locked back and the gun empty. It I assume your attackers would have run after the first shot.
I had a huge young man show up at my door a midnight once. Early COVID lockdown and we were watching Netflix. He looked like a good friend of our son.I opened the front door to chase off and saw he was a stranger.
I was wishing I had opened the door with a gun in my hand. Never will make that mistake again. But our two 17 - 18 pound dogs attached the guy. After the mean one had bitten him 4-5 times he just turned around and started walking off. Break dancing and hip hopping as the dogs kept biting his legs.
The dogs lost interest as he left, but I did not see a car. I followed him as he walked off.
Late model GM was sitting in front of neighbors home. No lights, when he opened door or on dash. No brake or taillights. No Iicense plate light.
They slowly drove off, rolled stop sign at the end of the block. Never saw a light. Thought about calling the police. But hoped they might come back.
Figured I was looking down the barrel of a gun as I walked around the car. I was very lucky too.

Now how I really feel. Living in Texas, there will be no legal issues if all parties are on my property.
That is why I usually do not carry. Might make a life changing decision affecting myself and others.
But a very basic question, do not take it wrong. You carry around the house and when you leave. But when attacked did not even try to use your gun.
My father was ex-military and later a LEO. He told me over and over to never point a gun unless planning to pull the trigger. And aim at assailant. No warning shots.
Course, he turned around and gave me a 32 Berretta Jam - O - Matic at 18. Twenty feet was about the range I could hit a person consistently. And it jammed about every other magazine.
Said chunk out window if stopped with it in the car. Said they had lots of replacements taken off people.
They have won -- "The ONLY thing needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" -- you are giving them the win!
You are killing us all.
In a later post the OP has said he will testify.

We wouldn't be having 90% of our violent crime and stealing problems if our legislators were not hell-bent on providing opportunity for repeat offending.

Well you were very fortunate. Once disarmed, they could have easily dispatched you. In retrospect, there was no way to draw and present your firearm in time?

Sorry for all the questions but these are real life case studies that can provide many learnings. Everything from holes in training, to revaluation of equipment (ie holsters) and carry strategies based on specific carry situations (ie taking trash out versus car etc).
I'd recommend getting out of there. They and their pals won't quit and won't forget. You're in for a lot of harassment, at the very least. I hate to say it, but cede the territory to them - you'll have a longer and happier life.

Get a guard dog or two. Mean ones.
That’s the problem with this town, criminals get a slap on the wrist and victims are ignored. In fact I’m going to refuse to testify for that reason. Even the local cops are fed up with the system here.

Testify and hang ‘em out to dry. Your community will thank you.
Absolutely. Either you or they need to move out. If your testimony would help that happen, then do it. You must live in a cultural Marxist hellhole with a commie DA, which means your right to deadly force is seriously limited as well. Good luck to you. Let us know what happens to those scum. Where is this?

You win the prize for asking the million-dollar question.

Maybe pepper spray would be a better option for the OP in his situation.
I hate to say this, but if they stay there, it might be cheaper and safer for him to buy a couple of cases of beer and offer it up as a peace offering to them. I know, but even Mas Ayoob would probably agree under these circumstances. This is a nightmare scenario. You can't stay awake 24/7 with your gun in hand. At least, if worst comes to worst, you can say you tried to make peace with them. A jury would find that helpful...

Hmmm. Let’s see….They beat him up, stole his firearm, discharged it while running away…. How about they buy the OP a couple of cases of beer instead lol!

The unfortunate thing about the OP's dirtbag neighbors is that they are career criminals. Criminal neighbors will do a few different things to people like the OP:

1) Pretend that everything is just fine but then break into his place at some point;

2) Pretend like everything is fine and then push the boundaries until they end up showing up at his house every day to drink his beer and eat his food, all with a sort of friendly menace to it;

3) While in his house earing his food and drinking his beer, they might then scope the place out to burglarized/invade it later or pass the information on to someone else who will.

With scum like those neighbors, distance and minimal contact are the best measures.

The “distance” part of the equation will be the challenge given they are basically next door neighbors. Aside from being well armed and aware, a dog and security system would enhance his defenses.

Distance is limited if he stays there, no doubt. For purposes of his situation if both parties remain in their current homes, distance will simply mean avoiding moving to within their line of sight to the extent possible.

The OP said that the neighbors are being evicted, so distance might end up being readily achievable when it's all said and done.

Yeah, I figured someone would say this. Mas Ayoob himself once advised trying this. You are trying to build a defense against willful escalation as an armed innocent person, especially in his DA's jurisdiction. It could prove to be the best $ 30.00 he ever spent...Take a neighbor with you to confirm under oath that you did this. Remember what Jesus said about turning the other cheek? Yes it is hard for a mortal to do, but it plays well to a jury. And who knows? The POS might offer to mow his lawn in appreciation... or not.... The worst that could happen is you and your neighbor will have 2 cases of beer to drink.

Mr. Ayoob's peace offering approach works with people who aren't common career criminals. With career criminals, you just don't want to even establish a social relationship for reasons I already stated. It's an invitation to potential exploitation and then the discomfort and inconvenience of having to stop it in its tracks.

I wonder how many here have ever had to kill another human being, whether in combat or elsewhere and endured the emotional trauma that is a natural part of our humanity? If you can glibly say it wouldn't bother you, you should slow down on your way to your next psych eval and let your humanity catch up to you

I already stated it. Maintain distance, and avoid contact.

Don't beat yourself up. We carry for protection, but none of us want to shoot anyone. It sucks, but shooting someone and the aftermath would have been way worse. Bad situation that ended in your favor. I think.

The 2 that who were involved in the attack know they will be arrested soon,I have a privacy fence and heard them, drunk, yelling about it without them knowing I was on the other side of the fence when I was out with the dogs. I have a German Shepard and a GS/Pit mix, cameras, which one has been readjusted to face the alley so I can see what’s going on in the alley.
I have 8 wired cameras around the house. Can’t get onto my property without me seeing it or my neighbors.
These are career violent criminals well known to local police here. Known for violence. They will hopefully be picked up next week. Moving isn’t an option with a mortgage on the house.
More training is needed on my part, which I went to the range yesterday for 3 hours, got some in but more to work on. Changing carry guns from a 40 S&W to a 9mm and learned a different way to hold the gun when shootingto help with recoil, which worked well.I was getting better grouping, but the way of holding the gun was a little weird and will take time to get used to.
Offering these people beer is the wrong thing to do,it makes them worse.
Recently they were shooting at the people who live across the street from them and they were shooting back. The other people moved away. I have never met these people until the day it happened since I don’t talk to many of my neighbors. I keep to myself and rarely leave.
Going today to pickup a new holster since I don’t have one for the new one yet since I didn’t plan to carry it until I shot it,which I done yesterday, around 500 rounds. More range trips are planned, likely weekly weather dependent. I’m determined to learn from this and not be a victim again.
As far as testifying, absolutely am doing it. The detective has assured me they will get jail time.
Making changes and learning is the best thing I can do. This whole incident lasted maybe 30-45 seconds from the time they ran out the door until I got back to my yard. I have it on video showing they came out of their house and me coming back Into my yard.
The 3rd person who was caught with the gun is facing 2 level 5 felony charges and another charge. If anything,it will be on their record if they do this again and have enhanced charges. I’m not going to live in fear,I’m going to be prepared if this ever happens again.

Glad you’re okay, and lots of great ideas in this thread. Maybe a couple more things to consider.

Put a lock on privacy fence gate and post a no trespassing and a beware of dog(s) sign on outside facing the alley.

Keep your trashcan locked in the yard until trash day, then wheel it into alley when ready for a pickup.

Get a dog or two. Don’t have to be viscous or too big, just need a big bark when things aren’t right. Far as I’m concerned, better than an alarm system (mine are house dogs unless we’re outside together). With lovely neighbors like yours, important to protect house while away.
