Robbed,Gun stolen

A few days ago I was in the alley behind my house and looking for my trash can since it was trash day. I spotted in the neighbors across the alley so I proceeded to go get it. (Ongoing issue)
3 people came running out and before I knew it,I was hit upside the head twice pushed to the ground and my gun fell out of the holster. Needless to say they grabbed it and took off, shot one round off.
I still don’t know how the gun came out of the holster,I was using a sticky holster since I was just running out back, normally use a retention holster.
Yesterday,by some miracle,my gun was recovered before it was used in a crime. Not sure when I’ll get it back but I learned a very hard lesson. Never use a sticky holster outside the house again. Use the retention holster.
The sticky holster is good for having it in the house, but in no way is it good for anything else.
I leave 2 firearms out when home,my 229 which is what was taken and a 365. I put whichever one I don’t carry in the safe before leaving along with everything else,I don’t even leave ammunition out.
I’ve beat myself up over this the past few days and can’t believe how damn stupid I was for not using the correct holster, even for just a short walk out in the alley.
One person was caught and the one who had my firearm is sitting in jail now.
Figured I would share this to show no matter how careful you are, things like this happen.
I knew there was no way I was going to take out 3 people rushing at me so I never considered trying and just tried getting back into my own yard and avoid the whole situation since it’s fenced in with a privacy fence and the gate was open.
Lesson learned.

Sticky holsters are worthless unless in your pocket for pocket carry.
And even then I have had a gun fall out of my pocketed sticky holster while on the ground in my yard. So I would expect the same could happen if knocked or pushed down in a confrontation.

I’m old school. Proper and rock solid secure holster with a really good belt so I know nothing about Sticky Holsters, but as an outside observer, I’m wondering if one of the many take aways from this unfortunate event is that maybe Sticky Holsters aren’t the best carry/holster option? Or am I missing something?

I’ll never use one again for carry outside of the house. Inside they are ok for having one in. They have their place, just not for edc

I know just have fast things can go sideways. I am happy you are okay, that you shared this so we can learn and make any adjustments, and that they are ID, and things are moving forward. It is my hope that you can sleep well, and gear down from this. Rest easy ole boy.

Nope, you're not missing anything. I only tried one with my Ruger LCP many years ago as a deep concealment option. After that incident I stopped using it, and on the rare occasions I carry my LCP, its in a AIWB Vedder holster. 👍

Been hard to sleep since it happened, replaying it in my mind a lot. What could I of done differently, that sort of stuff.
I’ll get more training in this year and hopefully it helps in the future. Not wasting anytime starting, going tomorrow with a retired cop. He’s already called to make sure we were still on for tomorrow.

Good for you.
Excellent way to benefit from a bad situation. Everything happens for a reason and at the end of the day you will be better for having been though the experience.

I'm guessing you live in Indy. It has turned into a liberal crime haven. The prosecutor does catch and release and the current mayor wants to ban everything and make Indy a gun free zone. Move north is the best advice I can give you. Glad you're ok

I have a few thoughts for Shawn 156 how about a few other security upgrades. Home security system like ADT also a camera system. You can probably get help from family or friends to help get camera system installed. If you think about ADT I'd go with the old hardwire system no need to depend on wifi or internet.
I saved the best for last sounds like you need a good dog as a companion and friend. Plenty of good dogs looking for a good home. Then some Beware of Dog signs on the privacy fence. The dog would be some work but also very rewarding.

I have everything I have mentioned and a few other things. Some people ask me what I'm scared of. I tell them I'm not scared just prepared and not a soft target. They laugh about my Beware of Dog signs. I tell them need to read the fine print at bottom. My signs say Beware of Dog owner in fine print.

Gun fell out of holster? sounds like the dancing FBI S/A. VERY poor situational awareness. and holster. you are SO lucky.
That’s the problem with this town, criminals get a slap on the wrist and victims are ignored. In fact I’m going to refuse to testify for that reason. Even the local cops are fed up with the system here.
They have won -- "The ONLY thing needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" -- you are giving them the win!
You are killing us all.

Maybe because they are neighbors, a useless municipal government and not needing further problems.
Let's blame it on someone else -- the mantra of our society now?
Standing up is painful. Rightfully so. Necessary.
Standing down is easy. Shameful.
This isn't a grade school playground; this is life. Live it or leave it!

It would of been justifiable, problem being, could I of taken all 3 out without one getting to me first? That’s the question no one can answer.
If you are that scared, why do you even "carry", or have firearms for that matter?
If your life is worth defending, it is also worth dying while defending it.

To answer your question, you couldn't have "taken all 3 out". You don't seem prepared to "take 1 out". That is, to stand up for yourself, to defend yourself.
The answer for many others is "Yes, you could" but I wouldn't say that for you. It appears that you haven't done the hard work necessary to effectively use a firearm.
Hobbies are nice and hobbyists keep their "stuff" inside and protected.
Suggestion: Move Quickly!

Glad you are mostly ok.

My only suggestion is to buy a quality gun belt (check out The Belt Man) and then buy a quality and comfortable holster that you wear ALL THE TIME, even INSIDE the house.

Your thoughts are ones that often times make me ask the questions:

Could we have pulled off the American Revolution with today’s society? Defeated Nazi Germany/Japanese? Are we all too comfortable and “civilized” now? I look back on our forefathers with awe.

It’s all about situation awareness not the holster

I already have security cameras wired which helped disprove part of their story that they never came out or the house whatsoever, but with a privacy fence it didn’t catch when they came at me.
I do plan to testify after speaking with the detective yesterday about my concerns of the prosecutor.
Was I wrong for going on their property yes,I’ll admit that part. The ongoing issue was of them taking the trash cans from not only me but others. This was the first time I had ever had any type of interaction with them, never talked to them before Monday when this happened. I should of been more clear on that part.
This is all excellent news! I am glad you live in a jurisdiction where you aren't suffering the possibility of being the "accused". It sounds like it probably helps that there is history there on your side (of their bad behavior). I hope everything continues to go well.
