Robbed,Gun stolen

5008 Views 135 Replies 50 Participants Last post by  8M3
A few days ago I was in the alley behind my house and looking for my trash can since it was trash day. I spotted in the neighbors across the alley so I proceeded to go get it. (Ongoing issue)
3 people came running out and before I knew it,I was hit upside the head twice pushed to the ground and my gun fell out of the holster. Needless to say they grabbed it and took off, shot one round off.
I still don’t know how the gun came out of the holster,I was using a sticky holster since I was just running out back, normally use a retention holster.
Yesterday,by some miracle,my gun was recovered before it was used in a crime. Not sure when I’ll get it back but I learned a very hard lesson. Never use a sticky holster outside the house again. Use the retention holster.
The sticky holster is good for having it in the house, but in no way is it good for anything else.
I leave 2 firearms out when home,my 229 which is what was taken and a 365. I put whichever one I don’t carry in the safe before leaving along with everything else,I don’t even leave ammunition out.
I’ve beat myself up over this the past few days and can’t believe how damn stupid I was for not using the correct holster, even for just a short walk out in the alley.
One person was caught and the one who had my firearm is sitting in jail now.
Figured I would share this to show no matter how careful you are, things like this happen.
I knew there was no way I was going to take out 3 people rushing at me so I never considered trying and just tried getting back into my own yard and avoid the whole situation since it’s fenced in with a privacy fence and the gate was open.
Lesson learned.

Make sure the police have the serial number of the stolen gun.
Was the stolen gun recovered?

They had the serial number and it has been recovered already. It’s sitting at the police department.

Sorry to hear about what happened. Glad you are okay. Happy they caught the person with the gun and the gun was found. Hopefully, the judicial system will work for you and not the POS who assaulted you.

Hopefully they can get a speedy trail and you can get your gun back. Glad you're among the living.

That’s the problem with this town, criminals get a slap on the wrist and victims are ignored. In fact I’m going to refuse to testify for that reason. Even the local cops are fed up with the system here.

Glad you’re okay.

Couple of questions for potential learnings :

What was the general setting? Rural or more Urban? Active crime area or not?

Demographics of the suspect. Age/race etc.

Situational awareness. How far were they from you when you first saw them closing distance on you?

Urban area, known criminals and the only people in the neighborhood who cause issues, otherwise pretty quiet. About 50-75ft when I noticed them.
With my health issues,I wasn’t able to run only walk so they got to me fast.

Well you were very fortunate. Once disarmed, they could have easily dispatched you. In retrospect, there was no way to draw and present your firearm in time?

Sorry for all the questions but these are real life case studies that can provide many learnings. Everything from holes in training, to revaluation of equipment (ie holsters) and carry strategies based on specific carry situations (ie taking trash out versus car etc).

Well this goes along with what I always say.
" It can happen any time any place."

There were 3 of them,I knew there was no way I would of gotten to all 3 as close as they were to me and didn’t expect the outcome of getting hit and thrown to the ground,so drawing wasn’t really an option. If I would of drawn,I could of faced charges of brandishing a firearm or worse if they would lie and claim I pointed it at them.
So with the few seconds I had and as close to my yard as I was,I took the flight mode instead of fight mode.I felt I could of made it to my yard in time, but didn’t. I was close.
I’m extremely lucky to be typing this and not in the morgue. Trust me. I have replayed this many times in my head and I still feel I made the right call to try and get away and the only thing I would of done differently was use the retention holster.

Raises an interesting question. Is there such thing as letting the “you’re going to get hung out to dry” narrative/fear something that could cost one their life? If we get too caught up in “over thinking” I wonder if it creates risks of not acting when required/merited. There was one of you, and you have health issues. There are 3 healthy attackers who are “known criminals”. Not saying you should have done anything different as this is very much an individual decision based on a plethora of personal variables but, I think you’d have been in a sold and defensible position all things considered. Trying to avoid legal scrutiny for a clean defensive shoot is understandable but not at the expense of dying.

Being in the area I was,If I would of missed by chance, that creates a stray bullet that could go anywhere. There are a lot of different ways this could of played out if I would of drawn my weapon. I could of got one and the other 2 would of had me and shot me. I still could of gotten shot with my own gun with how it did go. It’s a tough situation to be in and one I don’t want to be in again.
I likely would of been cleared of the shooting but the prosecutor here is antigun

Glad you are ok and the police recovered / secured your firearm. Tnx for sharing, I learned a lot from your experience.
I wonder if those guys knew you own weapons and moved your trashcan to make an opportunity to get one.

I don’t think they did. I hide it well. Only a couple of neighbors know I own any and I trust them,in fact I have a few cameras on their house to help them out

Well as mentioned this is a good chance for all of us to learn. Just like the huge recent post "I shot myself". Thanks for sharing the details.
Now I understand if you don't want to answer other questions.
But my first thought was did you recognize these people ? Ever see them in your area or neighborhood ? If you do not recognize them is that common to see people or a group of three passing through ?
Any idea of why they attacked you ? Was it over the trash can ? Or think they were going to go for your valuables but then the dropped gun ?

They live behind me so yes I was aware they lived there but never had any interactions with them or even spoke to them. Like I said, they were trouble from the start when they moved in and continue to be. And yes,as stupid as it sounds,it was over a trash can which was in their yard since I had the serial number wrote down. Detective brought it back over to us. I didn’t recognize any of them since I have a privacy fence. I did pick one out of a line up of photos they showed me,waiting to be called in to pick the other 2 out or see if I can. It was quick and less then a 45 second ordeal.
Glad you’re ok and I do hope this helps people with holster choices when they go looking for one.

That is the reality in a lot of places unfortunately. If you had to shoot to defend yourself the system would go after you harder them the idiots that attacked you. Avoidance is the key unless there is no other option.
