Red dot on p365 vs…

2502 Views 42 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  danielkhoover
Has anyone tried a red dot on a pistol and found that it just wasn’t their cuppa tea?

I love a red dot on a rifle or a shotgun so I decided to get me a p365x slide and a Holosun 507 … and I just don’t like it on the pistol. The window is too small on a small gun or something. I don’t know. I think I could like a red dot on a bigger gun like my USP Expert but that kinda defeats the value of saving time shooting from concealment with a CCW.

Is it just me or has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? Love a red dot but not on a pistol.

As of right now, I think I’m gonna sell off my p365x slide with the Holosun as a package. It’s had 50 rounds through it but I don’t see myself putting more through it in my lifetime so it’s headed for the safe.

I find red dots on pistols to be a significant improvement, for several reasons. But I also know they aren't for everyone. Ultimately, it's whatever works best for you and it's great to have options.

Yeah I just wish it was universal love or universal hate.

I think red dots are useful… but apparently, they are only useful to me if they have large windows.

Some folks are forced to use red dots because they cant see the front sight any longer or have trouble focusing on it. I suppose that could happen to me one day but fortunately it hasn’t happened yet.

Most SD situations are point and shoot. Red dot takes training for sure. I have the X slide and 507k .. I practice nightly draws and finding the dot with unloaded pistol of course. Find objects in house and work on drawing pistol and putting dot on object ..getting better at finding dot but truthfully in a SD situation finding the dot might not be easy and neither would lining up sights .. more than likely it will be a point and shoot situation

Yup, that’s how I practiced with the dot on other guns. I point shoot with my regular sights on my pistols. I think it’s mainly the size of the window that’s my problem on the little gun.
I have to be honest, I WANT to like the red dot sights but no matter how much I try, its just not natural for me. I'll shoot fine with one but its more natural for me to find the front sight post or even point and shoot. It could be simply the decades of muscle memory or intractable old dog syndrome....I'll keep trying and maybe one day it'll snap into place.

I may be wrong but, to me, when someone says "point shoot" it means without referencing any sights, "regular" or optic. When properly using an RDS the "size of the window" is irrelevant. Just look at the P365 SAS for example. That's about as small a window as you can get.

What I train on is that within 5 yards, I don’t look for sights at all, beyond that, I see an orange flash only. When I refer to using my sights, I’m referring to the orange flash. Hope that explains it.

correct .. my point was that whether you have a red dot or iron sights on a carry gun it’s almost irrelevant because at SD ranges and how quickly they happen it’s going to be point shoot
Also:

In general, size always matters.

That’s how I feel about it too. I do like having the option on my ARs though. I can shoot fine with them but I prefer not to use them on my pistols. I may change that opinion when my vision starts failing.
I will just leave this here.

To quote AB, why do carry guns need sights at all. Sights are irrelevant and unnecessary. ‘I will just hammer the sights off my new gun and head out to the range… I prefer a middle lane’.

Yeah that wasn’t the point of this thread but I appreciate all of the comments. Looks like I’m not the only one who feels mixed feelings about dots. As for my p365x and 507, it’s already wrapped up in a silicone rag and placed in the back of my safe.

I like shooting with a red dot, but I'm lukewarm on carrying one because it's annoying to keep the window clean and adjust the brightness for ambient. As such my standard 365 gets carried more than my XL with 507k.

I opted to get one because I found that as I am getting older, it is harder for me to see if the front sight is centered, especially in low to dim light. Both my red dot guns have front and rear sights, so the red dot is more of an aid. I am not adding them on range guns, just what I will carry (aside from my LCP).

I'll agree that a micro red dot is not something everyone will like, and a bigger window on an optic does make a difference, but I would not consider 50 rounds as giving the setup a fair chance, it takes some practice.

It took me a few hundred before I was comfortable enough to use one for EDC. Since then I pretty much budget in an optic for every new handgun.

The reason I bought P365 that I can use red dot on it ..
I heavily trained on it and could safely remove iron sights now ..

don't look at site, with a red dot you have to look down range and bring red dot on target. was a new concept to me but when you practice it gets better and is faster then iron.

Yes that’s how to shoot with a dot. I was stuck on that concept too when I first started using them…

I find it easier to teach shooting with both eyes open with a dot. It has been very helpful for some students.

I’m definitely leaving them on my long guns (I’d never only have a red dot though; I must have backups), just not on the tiny guns.
Have red dot on few pistols. Love to go to the range with them. My EDC is a 365 LX with factory iron sites - no need for red dot here. Practice with this one too - every range visit
