P365XL Holster Headache

2360 Views 23 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  aslondon
Back in February I ordered a combat holster from Bullard Leather. Turnaround time at that point was 6-8 weeks. Worth the wait because they make really good holsters. But as week 8 passed, I learned they extended the time to 10-12 weeks. Three weeks ago I asked for an order status and was told my order was in production.

While I really like Bullard holsters, it's frustrating to delays. I get the supply issue for getting leather and other materials but if they are going to charge customers when the order is placed, they should do all that is possible to get the product out as quickly as possible. It'll be a nice holster whenever the hell it gets here but I need a holster now.

Any suggestions on a leather OWB holster that isn't going to take forever to get? I like the combat style (picture below) or the askin's avenger styles. I'm using a kydex LAG Tactical but have grown tired of the kydex feel and miss the low profile look and feel of leather.. Kinda hoping this post will trigger fate and I get shipping notification tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and for the opportunity to vent.

You could have one of these in a couple of days:

I like my Kusiak Outsider but they're made to order and can take a couple of months.

I like the lock leather series from Urban Carry. Priced right, built well and the retention system is genius. You can crank it down to where you will rip the belt loops off your britches before the gun will come out, no joke. So properly adjusted its gravy.

Fill in the drop downs for your holster #.

This is how it works...

I too was waiting on a holster from a high end maker when I found this one.
Between the quality of the work, (altho plain & nothing fancy) lead time, price and the locking retention feature we cancelled the other order.

I've owned holsters from both Kusiak and DeSantis. Nice designs but in my experience the leather is too stiff. Not the stiffness that can be broken in with a little use, but a stiffness that resembles plywood. Will check out Braids, though.

I like the concept but didn't like the execution. I've got one for the XL and to get it to lock, I have to get a rubber mallet and beat the gun into position. And that's with the retention loosened to the point where the screw is about fall out. It was an early run and they may have fine tuned things since, but just wasn't comfortable with it.

I think if the holster was fitted to a specific gun, it might function better but then you end up with the risk of production delays.
The last Milt Sparks I ordered directly took 16 weeks and they didn’t charge my credit card until a day or two before it shipped. I heard the wait is 26+ weeks now. The last MS I bought I found at a gun shop in Texas and he is an authorized MS dealer. It was for a commander 1911 so I’m sure that made a difference. Black Arch looks like good stuff too. Gonna try them out soon.

I have not heard that before, interesting.
Mine fits both the Icarus grip and the factory grip, I just have to open it a hair more for the Icarus.
Maybe you got a Friday after lunch built one lol

I started a similar thread about looking for an available and less expensive OWB leather holster for my P365XL while I wait for a Milt Sparks 55-BN OWB I ordered direct. I found a Milt Sparks VM-2H RMR IWB in stock at a dealer and am using that now and while IWB holsters were never comfortable enough for me before, with the smaller size and weight of the P365XL I’m not sure which one I will use more once I finally receive my 55-BN.
You will find that each holster will have its day depending on what you’re wearing and the level of concealment needed. Sparks’ holsters are so comfy I doubt I’ll ever try any other brand. My fav is the Criterion.

I too have tried urban carry "lock leather". I found it does lock positively, but it is too loose allowing the gun to "slop" around - too much for me. It was not a precise enough fit for me to consider using it for serious carry.

Azula works well I have them for 3 different pistols and revolvers.

I'll give Bullard a little more time but I do like the Azula holsters as well as the Aker's straight drop flatsider.

The downside of getting another holster is that I'm getting another holster. I just thinned out my holster draw and really don't want to start creating another stockpile. It makes me miss the old days when you could order a holster, have it made and shipped in just a couple of weeks.

Guess it could be worse. 26 weeks for a Milt Sparks holster? That's crazy.
Some times it pays to go to slightly smaller company, my recent go to has been Dave at Ronin Leathers holsters. He communicates well and try to give make just how you want it, of the last 4 four holsters the longest turn around time was two weeks.
I have DeSantis holsters for all of the pistols I regularly carry. The price is right, they're easy to get as they're almost always in stock, and they work as designed. I don't always carry a DeSantis holster, but if I buy a pistol that I don't already have a holster for, I normally have a DeSantis on order immediately. I prefer the Speed Scabbard and Thumb Break Scabbard models.
I don't like leather holsters but Don Hume has several options in stock.
Leather lined Kydex for the win!

Garrett Holsters.. some good reviews on forum..
Looks like the headache took care of itself. Just received shipping notification from Bullard. Should be here middle of next week.

In discussing things over email with the owner, along with supply issues they had COVID issues. My only gripe is that they could have emailed customers with orders pending to let them know that the delays grew. Things happen and knowing why delays went from 6 to 12 weeks makes it easier to digest.

Bullard makes very good holsters and this has been the first frustrating experience with them. I'll still recommend them for those looking for a custom holster but patience is needed.

Let us know what you think after you have some time with the new holster.
