P365XL breech face pitting. Normal or not?

I've got around 5k rounds through it, all factory stuff, Winchester and Federal range ammo. Is this anything to worry about?

That doesn’t look like normal wear to me

At some point you had a pierced primer or a loose fitting primer. The pits were caused by high pressure plasma gas cutting away the breech face metal. It only takes one failure of this type to cause this damage. I had a similar experience with a Glock 22. A blazer case cracked all the way to the web. Hot plasma gas cut the chamber and breach face.

So the question is do I keep shooting it? It will only get worse if I have another primer problem? At what point does it become a problem?

Maybe send photos to Sig and see if they think it's a problem? Doesn't look like a big deal to me, but I've never seen that happen before.

Contacting Sig is a good idea. I doubt there is a safety issue. I think this will be a “bug the **** out of you” issue, it would be for me.

5k rounds....hmm. I'd probably be replacing that barrel, if it was mine.

Never seen pitting like that on any of my SIGs (or any other maker for that matter). shouldn’t hurt to contact SIG. Interested to learn what they say if you don’t mind sharing a potential response.

With such a low speed projectile, I'd expect 100k rounds or more. Besides, this is the range gun. My wife's and mine get shot occasionally, but this is the one that gets pounded on for practice. I'm going to treat it like a Glock and if it breaks, I'll send it in.

Agreed. Changing a handgun barrel at 5k rounds is silly. Springs, maybe... :ROFLMAO:

personally when I look at the top photo in the OP i'm struggling to tell if it's a pit or some carbon build up without being able to feel it with my finger tip or with a pick or something. I can see the same groove in the center of the "Pit" down where the breech face is clean. Look at the original image and the area i tried and failed to clearly outline with my mouse. I'm not saying for sure it isn't and don't know what means the OP has used to determine it's actually pitted, I'm just struggling to say that is a deformity based on these photos alone.

that's not pitting, it's called gas cutting, you either had a bad fit primer or an over pressure round that popped the primer. the super heated burning gasses come backwards around the primer and like a jet cutter (being funneled from big chamber to small nozzle) cut the metal.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it, but I'd watch it and see if it gets worse.

Prople at Sig are usually helpful. Give them a call on where to send the pic to.

It's not the barrel . . . It's the slide. I wonder how long JB Weld would last? Goes to why some recommend only shooting their carry ammo (ouch!) because cheap range fodder can and will eventually do this. It's also something to keep in mind if you reload - loose primer pockets can cost you. Better to discard the case than discard the slide.

Glocks at a rental range in Vegas typically go 90k rounds (and it doesn't take long) before slide cracking, so, keep shooting it. Since keeping extensive records and checking after each range session logging what kind of ammo isn't something we all do much, I'd guess that something in the last 1,000 rounds or less did it, recollect what, and then avoid that in the future. Now, we had a member at one time who would adamantly recommend inspecting each case ejected on the spot to discover it for correction. Yeah sure, not happening, but it's pretty much the science answer to controlling it.

Until cases are becoming so deformed they cause malfunctions and can't be reloaded, it's back to I wonder if JB Weld would hold up? I wouldn't tell anybody I did, but it would be interesting . . .

When did you first notice this wear mark? Was it close to the 5k mark?

Yeah, around 5k. I usually clean it about every 500 rounds and I clean the breech face with plastic picks and a brass-bristled brush. Last time I cleaned it, I had a bit of carbon that wouldn't come off. Except it turned out to be a pit. I've shot CCI, Federal, and Winchester range ammo. Between my wife and I, it's going through about 400 rounds per month, so shooting only carry ammo would get expensive fast. It won't take long to save enough for a new slide. :)

That's a decent amount! I know it's a range gun but I wonder what Sig would say if you sent them pictures? They might just send you a new slide so you don't have to buy one.
