P365 as a Truck Gun?

2940 Views 40 Replies 28 Participants Last post by  hiketheball
Did a search here but nothing specific came up.

I’ve currently got a P229 Legion that I absolutely LOVE to shoot, and I bought it with the assumption that it would play multiple roles for me (home defense and concealed carry).

But now I often find myself in situations when out and about where I don’t feel the need to carry, or legally cannot, and so would prefer to secure the pistol safely in my vehicle for a short time.

However I do not want to leave my $$$ Legion in the vehicle. So now I’m thinking that something small, reliable, and more easily replaceable is in order. I know Glocks are super reliable but I’ve never liked them and likely never will.

So if I designate the 229 strictly to Home Defense, would the P365 be a solid truck gun as well as serve CCW duty?

I love Sigs but open to most other suggestions as well. Just trying to stay under $500.

Not sure if I would spend near $500 for a truck gun. Since size would be a minimal factor in properly securing a handgun inside a vehicle I would choose something a bit larger (4-4.25” barrel), higher capacity and a bit cheaper ($300). Fortunately I live in a free state (AZ not sure how much longer it will be “free”) and have a CCW permit. I try not to secure any of my handguns in my vehicle for any length of time and avoid/do not patronize establishments that are not gun-friendly. Good luck with your search.

A good truck gun would be a Taurus G3 or 111, maybe a Springfield xd

I'd get a P320. Or at least the P365XL.

The nice thing about the 320 and 365 platforms is the modular feature. Different grips and different length barrels allow for a lot of flexibility in different applications.

At one point I did own a 320 RXP but was not totally comfortable carrying it. Plus it’s the same size as the 229 so no added concealment factor there.

I do love the modularity, but the size difference is why I lean more towards the 365 family. Much easier to carry in the pocket or AIWB. Capacity is decent at 10-15 depending on mag.

Yet another part of me thinks perhaps a trusty ole revolver might be the better route. Capacity lacking but loaded with 357. Or even the new S&W CSX although it’s definitely got some teething issues to work through.

I prefer metal hammer fired guns, and a true believer in “you get what you pay for”.

Exactly! Our truck gun is an LCP Max. A gun that wouldn't bother me much if stolen. :D
I use a truck vault for when i have to leave a gun in the vehicle. Why would you leave an unsecured gun in your vehicle?

Buy a cheap LE trade in gluck ($300+-), as if it were me that's all I'd want to lose stuff gets stolen out of vehicles every day. Jmho 😁

The Taurus G3 or G3C would meet any truck gun criteria. Checked out both a while back and both had decent ergos and trigger for the price point.

He did say "secure the gun safely" which indicated that he is not leaving it unsecured.

Like many others, I have the best thing I could find to "secure" my gun when it must be left in the car. I know that the little "gun vault" thing is not really secure, but it's better than nothing and I have to use it very rarely - meaning visits to posted buildings like hospitals and some doctor offices. Proper signs do have the force of law in TN. I sort of think this is what the OP is referring to except he says "often" where for me it is "rarely."

Good point. A lot of guns get stolen out of vehicles. A truck vault would definitely be more secure than locked in a center console or glove compartment.

Agree, a gun vault is not a perfect or fool-proof solution but a gun vault will be more difficult to breach and subsequently be a major theft deterrent.

I paid $430 for a new sp2022 four years ago. It's a great truck gun, especially if you can get a deal on one. Not sure what they are going for in today's market. Or if you can even find one.

As for as a p365, it's small, there are models that are relatively economical, and you can put a 15 rd mag in it if you're not carrying it.

That can mean several things depending on the context. Many feel that just locking it in a car is secure.

A locked center console or locked glove box can be broken into in seconds by an experienced thief. So a locked center console or glove compartment is merely a “visual” deterrent. But better than nothing.

Leaving a gun, even "secured" in a vehicle is how a lot of them are stolen. Simply watch near restricted buildings and choose how late model it is, smash the glass, either cut the cable or crowbar the "vault" lid.

A truly secure gun "vault" in a vehicle needs to resist crowbars and 3 pound hammers for 15 minutes. Look at the retailers attack resistance time - if they dare. It's usually buried in fine print if at all. Should be made of 1/4 plate not sheet metal, and weigh more than you like to put into a vehicle. Usually replaces the console which then wraps back around it, and anybody can see they are bolted in from underneath. Cordless sawzall can take the converter, it can take the floorboard section out, the issue is can it drop down far enough to drag out and lifted trucks make that easier.

If there is no gun in a vehicle it cannot be stolen, and if the owner isn't in the vehicle no gun is needed. So, it's all about CCW, not arming your car or truck, which can't use the gun anyway. Only you can.

Also goes to anything left in the vehicle will rust. Anything. Marine grade is the default for stored guns in a moving vessel, plenty of modern polymer guns will do with stainless slides but barrels are often carbon steel as are trigger parts. They will need maintenance and rust will be a continuous problem in spring and fall - the door seals work against you trapping humidity inside instead of keeping it out.

Avoid the "truck gun" concept unless you have a lot of acreage far out of town and really dislike that particular one.

Thanks for the replies and input everyone!

The LE trade-in is a good idea. I will have to keep my eyes open. Are there specific sources for LE trade-ins (website, auction, etc)? Or just Gunbroker?

The gun will definitely be secured in a small vehicle safe, not just sitting in the console.

I expect this will be a CCW 50% of the time and Truck Gun the other 50%.

I have a lock box in my car with a cable around the seat frame. When I have to leave a gun in the car- I use that and slide it out of sight. Seems like I paid around $25 for it at Academy.
You can get them with a keyed lock or a combo...

I would get a 365 or XL and just carry it on your person when you get out. Get a good belt and holster and there won't be a comfort downside. Obviously the 229 is fairly large so no shame in not wanting to carry it. But carry something (on your person, not potentially inaccessible & unsecured in a vehicle).

If you legally can't, that's another story I suppose.
