I was cleaning a Sig P238 and the ends of the recoil spring looked rusted. I cleaned the rust off and put a coat of oil on the spring to protect it.

I considered purchasing a new spring and save this for a spare. I went to Sig's web site and looked at a spring kit and the spring in the photo looks rusted.

Does anyone know if that is rust possibly occurring during the cutting of the springs or is that a protective coating put on the spring ends?

If I'm understanding what you are talking about, Sig paints one end of the spring, to show the tightest wound end, and to indicate it's weight rating, by a color code.

That makes more sense. Didn't think a class-act like Sig would sell rusty parts.

I never saw rust on ANY recoil spring. Very strange. Call SIG customer service, they may send you a new one.
