P229 Elite: A Good Deal?

1824 Views 41 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  TX_Punisher
Hey all, got a question for you. LGS has a nice, used-but-very-clean P229 Enhanced Elite 9mm in the case; gun only with one mag (no case or anything). It's marked at $900, but has been there a few months with no real interest. Manager knows I'm a Sig guy, and he's tired of looking at it, and said he'd do $700 out the door for me. Is that a good price these days? I remember in the before times you could snag a CPO version of these with 2-3 mags for $500-$600, but those aren't "Build Back Better" prices. And, for those of you that have them, how do you like them?

Great price on a great pistol. The only reason not to take it would be because you have 5 or 6 of them already. And even that is debatable. :)

I own 2 P229s Enhanced Elites. One in 9mm and one in .40. I really like this Sig. Has SRT and my beloved front serrations. $700 out the door is a good price assuming she is in good shape.

Right now that seems to be a decent price.

If you keep an eye out online you may come across some of the new elites for around 900. You'll get a new pistol with what I believe is the legion frame (undercut trigger guard and less pronounced beaver tail), new tritium sights, and 2 or possibly 3 mags (not sure how many they come with now).

Good luck.

That’s a fair price. Mags will cost $40-45 per. No box and paperwork isn’t a big deal. E2 grips are not my favorite but many do like them. My 229 Elite is a 357 Sig and is my EDC. The 226/229 are considered one of the best combat handguns ever made.

Great gun at a great price. For reference, I just sold an elite P229 for $ 900 in very good condition.

If it is from the CPO batch, a couple of years ago (12/20), they normally started around $700, and went up from there. That's when I picked mine up at auction, and it was $718 from a $700 start.

Well with no original box or paperwork. I'd say if you wanted one as your shooter and or EDC that's the one. Unless you have another with more miles on it already.
Carry $650 in your front pocket and $25 in wallet. Mention the price of P229 mags. You know you need at least three mags bare minimum. Pull the $650 out count it to yourself. Tell them you got $650. Ask if they have any more mags for it. See if they bite. Or pull out wallet and $25 now $675. If not say let me think about it. Say something like if I put this cash in the bank wife or girlfriend will see it and know.
That's how I'd work it.

Same, though somehow I seem to own more Rugers than Sigs, lol.

Yours looks just like how I plan to have mine; mostly stock, but I'm going to swap the E2 grip out for Hogue G10s. And 100% agree, the P226 especially is what I measure all other guns against.

I honestly think I won't haggle with him on this one. He's my go-to guy, and has cut me some really great deals over the years, and keeps his eyes open for guns I'm looking for. Plus he'll let me do layaway, so that helps minimize any sticker shock. And from what I'm seeing, the price is pretty decent.

Can you guys tell me if I'm correct about mags? As I understand, old P228/P229 mags will work with a little wobble, same with P226 mags? I wouldn't carry that way, but should be good for range use?

Keeper, I’ve never fully understood the 9mm 228/229 mag thing. Most of the time CDNN has OEM 229 mags for sale both new and used. Good, fair prices on the used ones and they are in lightly used condition.

Yes the older P228/P229 Magazines as well as P226 Magazines will work, but since a few thousands narrower at the base, will "swing" side to side, so to speak.

Correct P229-1 Magazines are available from Osage County Guns for less than $40 apiece, last I checked, and the last I got from them were "Italian" made.

I always ask for a discount (or a spare mag/accessory) unless it is already an incredible deal.

You never know how much money they actually have in it.

Worst case he stands pat and you buy it for his asking price...

Considering he already came down $200 for me, and is eating the tax in addition (so that it really is $700 out the door), I think it's fair.
