P229 DAK .357 Sig question

493 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Willard
Just picked up a used LE P229 DAK in .357 Sig. It is more for an occasional range gun and part of a varied Sig collection. Couple of questions I could not find in the Search.

First, it uses a 12 round magazine in .357 Sig. I have a P226 .40 with the extra barrel to fire .40/.357 Sig as well. The p226 magazines lock in the P229, but are a little loose vertically. Before I do something stupid, will the P226 magazine work properly in this P229? Remember this is the original design P229 magazine, and not the current P229-1 style.

Second, this P229 came with the Hogue wide grips with the finger positions moulded in. Was this the original grip, or were these added later? Would any current P229 grip work on this or not?

I also have a LE trade-in P229 DAK. You can use P226 magazines in the P229. In .40/.357, both magazines are the same capacity, 12 rounds, but the P226 magazine extends about 1/4 inch below the frame of the P229. The P226 magazines that I have (SIG and Mec-Gar) all have the flat base plate, while the P229 magazines have an extended plastic plate. I don't have any vertical movement of the P226 magazine in the P229 frame, although there is a slight amount of side-to-side movement at the base.

Mine came with the Hogue wrap-around grips too. I don't know if they were supplied to the user agencies with the grips in place, but on my pistol, it is apparent they were never removed. The anodizing on the front strap is worn away, although the horizontal grooving is relatively undamaged. There aren't many options for DAK grips, so I use standard DA/SA SIG factory grips on mine.

Grips are aftermarket. Current grips will fit just fine.

Remember the P229-1 only refers to 9mm P229's. The .40/.357 mags are wider than original 9mm mags. The P229-1 mags are made to the same dimensions as the wider .40/.357 mags.

Yes, P226 mags will function fine, but as you have noticed they are slightly loose/wiggly. P226 mags are the same width as P228 (and early P229/9) mags.

I have more than I need of the P226 .40 magazines. If the extended plastic plate was available, I could turn a couple of my P226 magazines into the P229 that would fit a little better. Has anyone seen those plastic base plates anywhere? I will start my own search tomorrow when I get home from work.

Thanks for the quick answers.

I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about or not... SIG SAUER P228/229/M11 Mag Adapter - X-GRIP Mag Adapter (x-grips.com)
I will look at those adapters closely. They may work. I was hoping for the full replacement as on the P229 magazines. This looks like it slides down the magazine body until it reaches the foot plate. I will look more and then decide what I will buy.

The dealer selling this P229 also had several others, all of which had the thick Hogue grips on them. Sig told me they originally went to the Richmond, VA police department. Possibly they made the change from the original Sig grips to the Hogues.

Thanks again all.

Installing a P229 floorplate on a P226 Magazine will fit, but it will be about 3/8" too long. This adapter resembles the P229 floorplate, but slides over the standard P226 Magazine with it's OEM floorplate, eliminating the "Gap" between the bottom of the grip frame, and the Magazine floorplate.

I believe there were probably several government contracts, for P229s with the Hogue rubber grips, just as there were with P220s, and P239s. Sig has even carried Hogue rubber grips as replacements. No
