P229-1 Magazine Springs and Followers

Does anyone know where I can find P229-1 9mm 15 round magazine springs and followers? I called sig and even though I'm an armorer they claim that they only sell complete magazines.

Thanks!

It could make a difference on who made your magazine. My 229-1 magazines are US manufactured, by Checkmate. I don't know if they use the same spring as Mec-Gar or not, but depending on who made your magazine, you may try contacting their Customer Service, to see if replacement components are available.

The following pictures show the difference in my magazines, a P226 9mm 15 round magazine, a P226 .357/.40 12 round magazine, and a P229-1 15 round magazine.

If you notice how the spring fits "into" the follower on the second two, but "onto" the first. This is how they increased capacity in one case!

I know you can order replacement springs from Mec-Gar, but unsure of Checkmate, since they don't list Sig magazines on their website, the last I checked. Mec-Gar only lists the 17 round extended floorplate mag on their website in addition to the 10 round mags. The 17 round springs should fit the standard 15 magazines made by Mec-Gar, but not sure if they will on the Checkmates.

I know the Mec-Gar P226 ,357/.40 magazine springs will fit the Checkmate P229-1 magazines, but too many coils, and would need to trim to the same # of coils.

I hope this helps...

Good Luck!

Very helpful thanks! How can I tell if my magazines are made by Checkmate? I have some that are stamped made in Italy which I assume are Mec Gar and others with no country of origin that I can find

If they are not marked, consider them to be Checkmates. Mec-Gars will either be stamped with their Name, or if Sig marked, will have the made in Italy stamping from most of the examples I have examined.

The website doesn't say if the mag spring fits the 229-1 mag, so I would call and ask before buying:

WOLFF SIG SAUER EXTRA POWER MAGAZINE SPRINGS | Brownells

They don't seem to have the follower.
The Wolff springs you reference, in the 5% and 10% "Extra Power", are for the older P228 9mm 13 round magazines, and P226 9mm 15 round springs, that have the follower, as shown here, prior to their increasing capacity in the physical magazine tube size, which started with the .40/.357 magazines.

I have a 17 round Sig Sauer 9 mm magazine... Sig no longer makes the mag and my springs need to be replaced... any suggestions..
Welcome to Sig Talk, from the southwest corner of Indiana.
If they are marked "Made in Italy" they are normally Mec-Gar

Replacement parts should be available through their Customer Service:
Contact Us | Mec-Gar Magazines

Due to your location, in California, you may run into problems, in them shipping to you, even though you may be legitimate...

I have confirmed mec-gar 229-1 springs are exactly the same in their 17 rd mags as the Sig marked made in Italy 15 rd mags, so you can just order either from mec-gar.
What if you're stuck with the Checkmate magazines? I can't get any of the 4 Sig ones that I have, which are brand new, to run correctly. The follower jams and the rounds become loose in the mag.

Rounds will "rattle in the magazine" to a point, as there is clearance when you go from double column storage, to single column feed. As far as followers jamming, if you have cleaned out all the "preservative oil" residue inside the magazine tube, and off of the followers, and they still hang up, I would ask you to post pictures, of both the springs and followers.

One option you have if you can't find Italian Sigs. You can swap the base plates and locking inserts from 17 rd. Mec-Gars with your 15rd. Checkmates to create 15rd Mec-Gars. I did. Mec-Gar uses the same springs and followers for their 17rd mags they sell.

Can't buy 17 round magazines. Live in a state with a 15 round limit.

I think they still get some from Mec-Gar. I was in the area about six months ago so I stopped in Top gun and they had three 229-1s left and they were Sig / mec-Gar so I bought them. The guy told me they get what Sig sends them and to call for verification before ordering.
