I wish I could help you but there are better informed people on here that can. 228 guru 12131 will probably be on here to help out. I would think if everything is matching and a factory nickel the price would be good.

Mr Waverly, it looks as the plating is "flaking" on the rail, also other 2 areas circled looks to have a "loss". I'm no expert by any means, but I do know, many vendors, years ago wouldn't guarantee plating aluminum, which is the grip frame.
I don't think without any supporting documentation, to prove it is a factory finish, that it would be worth $700. If the seller wants a sale, he should be willing to give you the serial number, so you could check with Sig CS, to see if they have any records concerning what finish left the factory.
I know there have been several threads here, concerning the fact that sometime distributors would have nickeled finishes applied. To me that isn't the same as a "Factory Finish".

I'm no expert but I would pass on it. You'll spend more money just having it refinished and replacing the sights.

You can find good deals on used P239s. My local Cabelas has three in their Gun Library right now for around that same price (not nickel plated). Also check GunBroker.

Also, for a couple hundred more you can have a brand new one and send it to Robar for the NP3 coating if you really like the nickel look.

Can you get it for less? Offer Six Benjamins maybe? At that price, issues become less of a big deal.

I would shoot the **** out of it anyway

228 Purchase Advice

Sig CS does not have records as to origionality of the types of finishes that left the factory. Best bet in this case in my humble opinion is to try to buy it for 500 or 550 and have it refinished. Klein Plating turned in their records to the Feds when they shut down. Sig records do not go back that far so I have been told. BUT-I have 2 nickel Sigs. About 4 years ago I wrote CS to see if my 228 and 226 were factory nickel. I received a HAND WRITTEN NOTE stating that both left the factory blue. Well guess what-all Sigs left the factory blue on the way to Klien Plating. Anyway my Sigs nickel plating look factory. They are perfect. Also a lot of Sig owners sent theirs to Klien to be nickeled.

Look for one with triple matching serial numbers, original case, owners manual, signed test target, and no dings!

That is worth around $700.

Not that they are rare but not for sale that often. And while we are at it price a real nice or NIB two tone 228. That is when you will meet reality head on. Of course I am speaking of triple serial Germans.

I did decide to pass on this, with price and the condition being the two major factors for me.

I do believe this is the same gun that alinc100 picked up.

There can be a huge difference in what they are worth, versus what they are bringing.

well i does look like a nice piece i would try and find one without finish issues ...these guns might not be as plentiful as others...but they are out there and with some patience u will find one...after i had to sell my first sig p220 due to illness...around here these are not readily available...so once i seen another one and was able to get one...i almost jumped on it...i am so glad i did not...i waited for the right one for me...i was able to find it and still have it today.......hope u find the one u like and is perfect for u too...God Bless,John...
