I have an older P226 (1993) that I want to change out the hammer spring for something lighter as the D/A pull is atrocious. Since I have the old-style spring and spring seat, do I upgrade to a long or short style plastic mainspring seat for the new spring? It appears I need to modify my old plastic grips to get this to fit as well. Simple grinding of the inside of each panel will work? Will Hogue rubber panels work without modification? Finally, should I keep the old style trigger bar return spring in place or should I upgrade to the new style?

Many folks find that the newer style mainspring assembly provides a pull that is superior to the old one.

You may have to make room inside your grips; I had to when I put one in my P6.

I installed a 19 lb Wolff spring and do not experience light strikes. Make sure you get the right size spring (new vs old).

You can use either the long or short plastic mainspring seat but you MUST use the appropriate new style strut that goes with each seat (they are not the same). See pic. As DBS said, you will have to remove material from the inside of the grips if you use the original grips. I just used a utility knife to shave the material away. See pic #2. Yes the Hogue grips will work without modification. If you use the original grips, then you cannot use the new style trigger bar spring without removing material inside the right grip. I'd advise to use the old TBS as there is too much room for error when doing the modification as the grips are really thin here.




Pic #3 shows what the inside of your grip looks like. There is no relief area for the coil in the trigger bar spring. This relief area would need to be created or the trigger would not reset.



Pic #4 shows what the relief area needs to look like to allow room for the new style trigger bar spring.

For one, evidently the reason the newer mainspring assemblies seem smoother, is that the newer mainsprings are lighter than the older models with the metal seat, according to Wolff, the metal seat springs were generally 24#, while the plastic seat springs were 21#. Early 220s were supposedly 22#.

You can get a lighter mainspring, for the metal seat, and not have to deal with changing seats and struts. Currently it seems one or the other remains "back ordered". That's why I replaced springs only on my P6 and P225.

The Hogue grips will depend on when they were manufactured, and for which style was current production at the time, I imagine.

You could also send it to the sig factory and have them do a factory refurbish job. to update the pistol to modern standards...

Good info all and thanks for the input.

I have an E2 strut and spring and put them in place and the trigger pulls changed drastically. But, I have to change the grips or relieve the originals of some material for them to fit.
