P226 purchase advice

2593 Views 42 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  GunCrazedRedneck
I have been wanting to pick up a new P226 in 9mm for a while now. It mainly will be used for abuse at the range. I already have a West German P226 in 9 I picked up used but it has been rode hard so I don't shoot it much. My lgs has a P226 Legion LE black, optic ready, for $1,250 and a P226 Elite for $950. I've been wanting to pick up the 226 strickly for range time. I'm leaning more towards the Legion but I think I would be happy with either. Any thoughts on which way to go will be appreciated.

The Elite should have all the frame updates the Legion has. So that is good. The Grips, trigger and sites are the only things separating the two. I prefer the sites and grips on the legion and it would cost the difference and some to swap em.. so in this case I would go Legion.

I have both, but you could argue the "Elite" is the better value for your purposes. Similar specs too.
Unless of course you want/need an optic ready gun.

If you like the X-rays and G10 grips better, go for the Legion. And you would also get a third mag as well. That would justify the $300 difference right there if you were going to modify the Elite.
The optic plate is a bonus.

You may be right on the trigger but I remain confused on this one. Sig states it's "standard"
but most secondary market ads state it's a SRT,

pairs a Hogue SL G-10 grip, an X-RAY3 Day/Night sight and a SRT trigger".
You are referring to the Equinox, not the Elite.

Yep I edited my post. I was looking at the "enhanced elite" next to specs for a
Equinox. The enhanced does have the SRT, but no G10's. I stand corrected.

The Elite, would be the better value. For the difference in initial cost... on the order of $300, you could get a professional Trigger Job, and with a few more $$$, new G-10s. Since you are talking about a range gun anyway, the Legion is more about "glitz", than function.

Without repeating those items above, it would boil down to whether or not you enjoy having your range gun your way or just taking the Legion package. I like very much the Elite that is then custom worked to your desire better.

I think it would come down to whether or not you have any desire to use a red dot? The G10 grips, x-ray sights, and optic cut are well worth the price difference if those are features you want.

The LE Legion is a sweet deal that I’ve been looking at myself. When I finally buy one I’ll get the RXP model with the Romeo 1 already installed with suppressor height x-rays.

My own choice was to get a P226 MK25 version and install the SRT trigger. The Chrome lined barrel is a great enhancement that should extend the life of the pistol.

The Legion is a fantastic shooter. I recently picked up a 226 Legion SAO RXP for $1350.

It depends. For instance, I like iron sights so it make sense to get the Elite and use the price difference towards ammo. But if you enjoy modern sights (red dot) then Legion is a better choice.
Wow, I'd go immediately for the Legion LE Black, a rare find in my neck of the woods (and I've never been a fan of the Legion gray finish--or whatever exact colors it has seemed to morph into the last few years). I wish Sig would make all Legions black, which is why I got my MK-25 and upgraded grips and trigger.

Currently I'm hoping to find a P220 Legion in black somewhere.

Legion for all the reasons mentioned. Plus, you get a 3rd magazine included and can sell (if you want) the bag/coin for $50-$100. I own the LE black versions of the P226 and also the P229 (as well as in the standard gray versions) and they are all business. Not flashy. Very LE/Mil feeling. The LE version specifically is extra low key in that it doesn’t have the Legion logo on the G10 grips. The “unpublished” Legion discounts on Sig purchases (parts and services) is an added bonus which may end up paying for a portion of the weapon over the years.

This is a tough call but a win-win either way. I have the P229 Legion LE and it is a great pistol. I also have a P220 Elite which I love. If I could afford the both I would buy them both. The Legion LE is definitly harder to come by though.

I would opt for the black LE model. As mentioned above not very common based on the places I shop.

Exactly . . . MUCH harder to come by. Good luck with closing the deal.
Only other factor not mentioned: if the Legion is an SAO, go with that
