P226 legion vs 1911 ccw

1773 Views 17 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  BNvy15
Hi everyone, switching up the edc. I have a p226 legion 9mm (but also have 357 slide and barrel) vs a kimber super carry (govt size) 45. I also have a sig 1911 compact. I know the 1911 wears a bit slimmer, but any ideas as to pros and cons for either one over the other?

TIA

That's quite the loaded question. What metric are you trying to compare? Capacity? Manual of arms? Ballistics? Holster compatibility? Accessories? I could go on. What factors matter to you? Narrow it down for us.

Sorry tommyh, my bad. (Lack of coffee lol) im expert in both weapon's manual of arms, not looking for the latest accessory. More of just i feel like i shoot the 1911 better, and i know gunfights are a rare thing, but we dont carry bc of odds, we carry bc of what IF.... i know the p226 obviously carries more ammo, . I guess what im asking is this: given the Hillary hitting the oscillating device, is there a reason to pick a 1911 over a p226, esp given possibility of multiple threats. Make sense what im asking?
There is no answer as both are valid. Choose what suits you your lifestyle and activity the best.
I have found the 226, 227 and full size 320’s just a bit long for my taste of EDC. For the 1911 I prefer a commander size. My EDC rotation, P229. P320 Carry and DW Guardian 38 super. And of course, Milt Sparks Criterion holsters.

It's not so much the proficiency with the action type, it's the subconscience, of say with the 1911, to deactivate the Safety during presentation, without thought! That's where, in my opinion, the DA/SA excells, as it's a "no brainer", nothing to remember, but pulling the trigger!

Then there is the capacity issue, which has been bantered about forever. In your scenario, so much needs to be considered, including ammunition type, and availability. While having frangible hollowpoints may level the playing field, in effectiveness. If we are talking fully jacketed ammo, the "bigger" hole, has always had the advantage.

Of course, last but not least, is "style" of carry, where concealment is your friend. Open carry, during more civilized times, the sight of a "cocked and locked" weapon, can create fear, for those "sheeple", who know, no better!

But then again, in your later scenario, if things were that bad, my concern would be about my long gun, more than my sidearm.

Since similar size and weight, 226 for me due to capacity

Which do you shoot better? Go with that one.

Or throw a P220 into the mix for the best of both worlds: DA/SA and .45 ACP.
Or, a 227 carry. DA/SA, 45 ACP and 10+1 flush fit. C’mon.
I was wanting to stay with what Ive already got, even tho i know there are numerous other fine pistolos out there. Just trying to figure out, given the current conditions of affairs, are there any reasons, other than perhaps "pointability, or nostalgia" (both of which mean nothin when it comes to self defense live fire engagement) to pick the current 1911 mentioned vs the 226? Other than the light SA trigger.
You shoot the 1911 better. It is slimmer. Holds half the ammo, but the ammo is .45. 1-230-gr. .45 projectile = 2 x 115-gr. projectiles. Remember that while a 9mm may expand, a .45 never shrinks. The Thompson-LaGarde tests have never been disproven by actual physical testing. Every other "test" has been theoretical computer analysis. YMMV

The 226 hands down .. I know all the 1911s fans will say “but two world wars”. The 226 is more reliable with a proven track record. If the 1911 is such a great platform then why didn’t the navy seals use it and why didn’t cops choose that platform over the 226?

Why not just find a P227, or like me a P227 SAS and have the best of both worlds?

I typically carry either the P227 SAS, a P320 X-Carry or a Dan Wesson V-Bob. I love all three. However, more often than not the P227 gets the nod.

In fact I have been going back and fort a lot on these of late and I just keep getting drawn back to that SAS. It shoots great, has a bit of an edge in ammo capacity on the V-Bob and an edge (for me) on the P320 because I like shooting and reloading 45 ACP more.

That said, the P320 is lighter than the other two and the V-Bob is slimmer and carries better for a 45…for me. But there is just something about that SAS.
The 9mm is less expensive to practice with and proficiency is more important than caliber IMO. Red dots are available for 9mm. The first thing I did with my 357 P226 Legion was to buy the 9mm red dot exchange kit. Later I got just the slide only with red dot and contrast sights on my P229s that I carry.

If I need more than a 9mm, then it's going to be a 12 ga or an AR depending on circumstances.

You can't go wrong with either set-up.I like both but tend to go more with the 1911,just easier to conceal.

I concur
The 226 will have more capacity, and I carry it more often, but the 1911 is slightly easier to conceal, and extra mags are slimmer. I'm a fan of both, but I've been shooting the 1911 since Marine boot camp in 1966, and occasionally I can even hit what I'm shooting at with one.

I like a full size handgun, and either is a good choice.
