P226 in 357 question

613 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  GunCrazedRedneck
I'm interested in expanding my 357 Sig capabilities (love my new-to-me P239!), and am considering a project to create a P226 SAO in 357. Question for y'all: If I purchased a P226 DA/SA in 357 (recent vintage, such as one of the early Legions) and used the slide plus 357 magazine on a P226 SAO Legion frame - would it work out the gate? Or would I need a 357 Sig locking block on the frame, or other modifications? Or is this idea simply not feasible, and if so - why?

My understanding is the slide size is the same between P226 9mm and 357 version, so assume things should fit together. But I'm uncertain if frame-related mod's might be needed to handle the higher pressure and recoil of 357 Sig.

Thanks in advance for any counsel!

Your first challenge will be finding the P226 Legion in 357. Those are scarce and when found, expensive. Same with P226 Legion in 40.

I did it with a P226 SAO 9mm frame and an Enhanced Elite .357 Sig slide. No modifications other than swapping slides and magazines. Shoots great! I did one in .40 S&W too.

The 9mm and .40/.357 sig slides are different but both should fit the SAO frame as the differences in DA/SA and SAO are in the frame.

40/357 sig slides use the same springs and mags. The sight heights will be different for .357 and .40.

Very cool! Thanks for the confirmation that this is feasible, much appreciated.

Now, as AzMaz observed, the trick will be to find the 357 slide. I am fated to be interested in firearm configurations that can't be reasonably had. Time for a multiyear quest!

Agree, it can be. I'm a hardcore optimist on almost everything else, but struggle to enjoy hunting for discontinued Sigs. It's my own limitations - I'm a newbie dork at Gunbroker and other sites (combo of inexperience and fear of scams). Need to get myself excited about learning where good hunting grounds are...

Easy Peasy... all you need are the following two things: a new in the box P226 40 S&W X-change kit and a new in the box P226 357 Sig barrel! I could make that conversion happen in under five minutes!!
