P220 vs 1911 question

5337 Views 55 Replies 45 Participants Last post by  Japoison
I have had quite a few 1911s since the 70's, mainly Colt, Kimber, and Springfield Armory. I have really enjoyed them all. As I slid into old age, dealing with arthritis, tendonitis, and a torn ligament in shooting wrist, I got rid of them. They weren't fun for me to shoot anymore. Earlier this year, in a Sig induced blackout, I bought a P220 Carry. I was truly amazed at how easily I was able to handle this pistol. It is a great shooter. So then I went out and bought a full sized P220 Elite. My FFL and I shot it tonight and we are both amazed at what sweet, smooth shooters the P220s in 45acp are. To me they are smoother shooting than any of the 1911s (some modified) I have owned. Has anybody else experienced this? The P220 has made shooting 45acp pleasurable for me again.

Oh yes! While I still have a couple of .45 1911's (Colt and Kimber), I have five SIG .45's: a P220, P220 Carry, P227, P245, and a P250 compact. I too find shooting the .45 in a SIG a pleasure.

P.S. - I do have a SIG 1911, but it's a 10mm, not a .45ACP.

I grew up on 1911s. I am down to having only 2 1911s left as I too prefer P220 over a 1911. Sig P220 SAO is definitely my favorite Sig.

I have 3 220s and several 1911s. One of the 220s is an SAO Legion. That is definitely my favorite, but I still very much prefer the 1911.

I also grew up shooting 1911s. However, I have come to prefer the P220 over the 1911 but a fan of both. Like the P220 some much that I have three and only one 1911. My P220 SSE Carry is my favorite. Would like to add a couple/few more to my collection. At this point I am only interested in WG/German and SSE Sigs.

As far as I am concerned, the P220 is the best 45 acp pistol made.

I have a 220 and an STI Trojan. The STI is a fantastic hand fitted 45 but the beat old 220 I have is still more comfortable to shoot. I agree that the 220 is hard to beat if you really want to shoot a 45.

Almost all my Sigs are SAOs, P220s and P226s along with a P938 and a Trailside. The only exception is a P229 40 DAK. I only have one 1911 remaining, a Caspian Commander sized 9mm. All are very accurate but the classic P series fit my hands best.

I am a big Colt Government Model fan and I'll admit, the P220 is a better combat weapon. I own several SIG P220 W. German and Browning BDA .45's. The one thing the Colt does better in my opinion is trigger action.

We have 2 1911s and 2 P220s, a 10mm SAO and 45 Match Elite. I like them all and they are all keepers but my scores with the 1911s are still a little higher than the 220s as I find the 1911 easier to shoot when limited to one hand. However they are all great guns so clearly the correct answer to the P220 vs 1911 question is both! :)

I love .45s. After reading this thread I now have the P220 on my “wish list.”

I've had Sig P220 SAO pistols including a 10mm Elite and a 45ACP Supermatch. Nice pistols but for SAO I prefer my Dan Wesson 1911s.

If the P220/226 .45 and 9mm variants were easier and faster to shoot and easier on the shooter, they would be dominating the IPSC world. They aren't. The 1911 platform does. That being said, the P220, P226, and P229 are well-proven and remain my favorite DA/SA pistolas. i carry them quite often, but the 1911 is King. Um, is the WC EDC9 a 1911 variant? Yes. Phew!. I'm safe.

Shoot the 5" barrel stainless P220 in .45 ACP and you will be even more hooked.

I own a W. G. P220 and a Sig 1911UC.
I can shoot that P220 better than any handgun I’ve ever shot!

Too many variables, to make an ultimate decision....

In the case considering SAOs, I'd have to give kudos to the 1911. Between Grip thicknesses, Mainspring Housing profiles, and Trigger lengths, it can be custom fitted to most any sized hand. This, plus the design allowing the shortest take up, and over travel helps in making this decision.

For DA/SA .45 Auto designs, the Sig has the honors in my mind, since I've never tried any others for comparison. But the Sig's controls, at least for me, are in the best position, for accessibility.

I was (still am by heart) a big 1911 fan. I’ve owned some really nice ones, mostly Colts from the 70’s - 80’s and a few early Kimbers. BUT, if the chips are down, without doubt, I’m grabbing a P220 over any 1911.

It was my first and is still worshiped as the safe queen.
The P220 Carry is still my favorite to shoot and I can’t thank you enough for helping me find mine.

The P220 Elite in 45 ACP is number one on my “to buy” list. I still enjoy my 77 GCNM and the DW Guardian in 38 super plus my P227 Elite. All are super accurate and easy on the hands and wrists.
