P220 project gun(s)

614 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  JeffJaje
I've been looking for a beat-up P220 for a project gun. I was watching two on Gun Broker that were not really beat up, but prices seemed fair. Long story short, I went away for a weekend, and came back and saw the price of one I was watching was acceptable, so I bid on it and won, and had totally forgotten I had bid on the other one before leaving for the weekend, and had won that too.

So now I have two P220 project guns. They both seem pretty tight, no wear on the rails, and rifling is very good. Each breaks just under 4.5 pounds in single action. Neither seem to have the SRT. Night sights on the one with the rail still glow a little.

According to Sig, the one with the rail was made in Feb 2011, the other was most likely made in 2003.

Now I have many more options for my project P220.

What are your plans for them?

My primary interest in a P220, would be an SAO in 400 Cor Bon. Unfortunately, I think the barrel makers (Bar Sto, Jarvis, KKM, EFK, Storm Lake) are all so busy with 9mm bbls, they aren't doing any of the more interesting, lower demand barrels. Ideally, I'd get a barrel with polygonal rifling, but I'll be lucky to get any barrel. That's for next year anyway. I have a P226 and P229 project for this year.

How much did you pay for these (round figures), if you don't mind sharing?
Nice! That's an older style Crimson Trace grip on the one. I have the same on my EDC (P229 40). The newer style CT has a single button on the front strap.) I carry OWB at 3:30, problem I found, in both car and plane, is the seat belt would push the outboard button and drain the batteries is a few days - I never remembered to turn the switch slide switch off. The fix was to "kill" the outboard button, as my large paws easily and naturally reach the left side button. CT uses a flexible PC strip to connect stuff, so I found a work around using a needle and syringe to inject epoxy through the edge of the button on the outside surface. Once that hardens, the button don't work no more and the batteries last for years, even if you use the laser often to "check" you dry point shooting.

Congratulations! From the title, I wasn't sure whether you were "looking" for one, or had found one!

From the one photo, they look pretty good, so good luck, and keep us up to date!

If your looking for ideas, how about a reverse two tone with a threaded bbl?

I'm not completely sure yet. Definitely adding the SRT, maybe a trigger job. I'd like to add new sights, and I really like some of the Trijicon HD XR ones, but I called Sig yesterday and they are running a special on the "Sig Service Plan" where they replace springs, clean it, put on night sights; and the rep at Sig said they are using the X-ray sights when they do it. He said at that point, the would just install the SRT for the cost of the parts (as they are already doing the labor taking it all apart for cleaning and inspection). So I may go that route as it may be less expensive and easier overall.

I was thinking of doing either a gloss black cerakote, and adding rosewood grips. Or going tactical and doing multi-cam black cerakote, threaded barrel, G10 grips, mag well. Maybe now I'll do both.

One of them was $450 the other $475 - plus shipping and GunBroker sales tax. I think I got a decent deal. I'm going to the range with a friend at lunch today to see how they shoot.

Well they both functioned fine. We were not trying to be accurate so much as go a bit quicker to test feeding, functioning, extraction, etc.
However, they do both seem to shoot lower than my 320's when aiming the same.

I would imagine the P320s sights are to be used as the Classic models, and that's with a "Combat Sight Picture" rather than a 6 O-Clock Hold... Which could account for your 2 groups.

I need to take it out again when I have more time and be a little bit more deliberate. When using the combat sight picture I was getting the shots in blue. When I sighted as shown, I was getting the stuff in the orange area. This was 15 yards I think, so not that far.
