Op rod questions

1185 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  datamarine
Hi all,

I'm new here and recently purchased a canebrake in 300BLK. I was looking to get a 556 barrel but wanted something I could suppress so I opted to get the 11.5" MCX cal xchnge that is a virtus barrel. After doing some reading I found that I would need a new op rod so I just returned the barrel.

My question is, what happens if the op rod IS NOT swapped and I leave the rattler op rod in? By the way I had two different calls in to Sig Customer Service and both times they told me it would run no problem. After searching forums and finding a video on youtube, I found out about the op rod swap. My question again though, would it have run? Anyone have experience on this?

Thanks,

There are two op rods. One for the rattler and one for everything else. Piston(What comes out the back of the gas block) length is determined by gas system length. With the short op rod, your 11.5 wouldn't have cycled. Without a longer piston, there world be no contact between the piston and rod. I've had several exchange kits but haven't seen one come with an op rod or piston head but admittedly Sig is notorious for changing things mid stream.

I stand corrected @littlejacks. I had my names mixed up. I was calling the piston the op rod. I thought the piston came with the caliber exchange kit that Sig sells. So he would need a barrel and piston to convert to 11.5”. Is that correct @littlejacks ?
Here is a clearer picture of the part names.

If my understanding is correct and sig hasn't changed the options, you should only need to get the standard up rod to have all your options available.

One other thing to keepin mind about the canebrake/rattler upper is the upper is shorter than the virtus so you're tied to that type of hand guard.

Anyone have a lead on buying a Virtus op rod? What I have found so far is expensive or out of stock. I called Sig too and they cannot special order the op rod (you have to buy the entire recoil assembly). I have a Rattler recoil assembly that I would like to convert.
