New member that is confused. I have googled, searched, read and am more confused now than ever.

I have an older P229 9mm that takes the older narrower magazines (not E2 p229-1 mags)
Is there any way to convert this Sig to shoot .40? Am I correct that .40 magazines will not fit the narrow magwell of the older P229 9mm frames.

Unfortunately you got that right. There is no way that you can fit a .40S&W mag in the old style 9mm frames because the magwell is too narrow.
But you could get you a used P229 in .40S&W or .357SIG. There are plenty police trade ins available right now for around $450 - $500.
Those you can convert to .357SIG/.40S&W with just a OEM barrel and to 9mm with a BarSto conversion barrel.
For 9mm you would need then the P229-1 mags though.

You are correct sir. The 9mm P229 frame (identical to the P228 frame) won't take any .40 mags.

.40 P229's are a good value these days and also great pistols. With a .40 frame you can run the 9mm slide from your 229, or a 228 slide provided you swap the .40 locking insert to a 9mm version and use the 229-1 mags.

Anyway you slice it, the P229 is a great gun in any caliber.

If you don't need the smaller grip, you can use 226/40 mags with an X grip adapter.

Add a 40 upper and locking block and you'd be good to go.
