I recently found a great deal on a P228 that I couldn't pass up. I'm not sure if it is something more of a collector piece or not since I'm not sure what would categorize it as such?? I've always wanted one to compliment my P226 Legion and now I have it!

My questions from the more experienced Sig community is would it be a sin to do too much to it? By that I mean get it coated, change the sights and possibly the trigger as well? I did change the grips from the big rubber Hogue monstrosity to these G10s. This P228 has definitely been well used as can be seen in the photos, but I don't want to commit a cardinal sin either. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It's your gun, do as you please with it. Definitely save the parts if you change anything.

I wouldn't bother refinishing it.

Nothing wrong with changing out the sights and trigger to fit you. Looks like most of the blueing wear on the slide is on the edges, holster wear. That tells a story so I’d leave it, especially if it was to be a shooter.
If I was to refinish the slide, I’d like it properly blued vs a coating. Barrel wear doesn’t look to bad to me.

I wouldn't do anything that isn't reversable. I have a W. German 228 from 1989 and I replaced the sights with Siglites and switched to both the short trigger and the short reset kit. I also found some original Sig 228 grips. If the slide finish really bothers you Sig will refinish it for under $100. plus shipping. I just had it done on my P229.

Oh yes, I'm plan on shooting with it. I don't like "collecting" firearms personally. I do enjoy the character that holster wear has on a blued pistol for sure. I'm mostly worried about what looks like a bit of rust on top of the slide near the sights as well as the wear on the barrel. Although that rust might just be my color blindness playing tricks on me or its not translating well through the pics I took. I've taken it out once and it has no problem with any of the ammo I put through from garbage fmj to top tier hollowpoints. I'm really stoked, because the price was almost too good to believe, but I couldn't pass it up. I bought it figuring I would need to replace parts, but maybe not. 😁

pt035458, gorgeous P228 there!! Sounds like you did all of the things I'm thinking about doing. I also have a P226 Legion and have been spoiled with the trigger and sights on it.

Congratulations!, I would recommend the "Full Service Package", or even the "SIG Service Plan" since you are interested in new sights... https://www.sigsauer.com/custom-shop/ as long as they are Sig "optional" sights. That way they will inspect and replace any small worn parts, and clean all of the little nooks and crannies!

As mentioned, don't do anything that can't be reversed. Once you coat or reblue it, you can't go back and value is lost forever. Even people that say they will never get rid of it, have a change of mind. Even if they don't, value is lost to anyone who owns / sells it in the future.

I am unsure why you would buy gun and then want to change everything about it, grips, sights, finish, trigger, etc...

Any NIB, or pristine Sig of German manufacture would certainly command a premium on the market, but yours is a shooter. Shoot it, enjoy it, love it, have fun with it!!!

Welcome from Texas.It's a shooter, so do what You want with it.
It's not a collectable unlike Mine which is a NIB Triple Serial # German proof marked from 1989 With Test Target and Manual.

Your P228 is a German made as in the parts were made in Germany the gun was assembled in the USA

A German proofed gun is a collectible an American is not (simplified)

Your gun is every bit as capable as a West German proofed Sig p228 as a shooter and we tend to be less sensitive to how we handle a non collectible pistol meaning you will have far more fun with your P228 than if you later buy a 1992 nicely kept WG one

Change the sites, ad an SRT and short reach trigger and as suggested you may want to send it to Sig for a complete overhaul (although I recommend taking the Sig Armorer course known as "YouTube" and do it yourself)
If the pictures are accurate and the frame is in decent shape you could redo the slide but I suggest (as did others) you send that to Sig and have it properly refinished to as it should look and stay away from "coloring"

A refinish from Sig will add value a color job will be spending money to lower the value of the pistol
That makes no sense and certainly no dollars

I looked at the upper right picture that said "Made in Germany" and never looked at the others so that makes a difference for sure on refinishing.

I have a KE in similar shape and I would not refinish it but then it is a car gun for that very reason

Don’t feel bad. I didn’t notice till this morning. Especially since the OP is blurring our serial numbers and such.
I don’t understand the blurring out of serial number thing at all.

Thanks for the advice, all. I think I'll take the advice and change out parts to suit my tastes for shooting, but nothing permanent. Trigger, sights, etc. I might give it a good cleaning with these sights off atv the spots in worried about and likely keep the finish as is.

As for blocking over the serial, I forget exactly the reasons, but a good LE friend of mine recommended it if I post pics. It's now a habit even though I can't remember why?
