New P938

I bought a P938 yesterday new from Academy, first question is it says it's an Academy edition. What exactly is the academy edition?

Shot it today, put 200 rounds through it, 150 FMJ and 50 V-Crowns. I had 2 stovepipe malfunction within the first 3 mags. But nothing after that. Overall I'm satisfied with it so far, it was reasonably accurate and not as snappy as I was expecting given the short barrel.

Welcome from Texas. It is basically a P938 that most likely has special Grips that Academy chose Themselves. It also could have a different trigger like say a short reach trigger instead of the standard trigger. not sure if Sig C S will be able to tell You the differences from the regular model. Hopefully You cleaned and lubed it before taking it to the range.

I definitely did. It was dripping wet with whatever they put in the plastic bag with it, it had to be pulled apart and cleaned. I put it back together with a little gun grease just like I have done with my 1911.
My P938 has been my favorite EDC since I purchased it about six years ago. I've found it surprisingly accurate and absolutely reliable (see exception below).
The only little quirk I stumbled on was when the hammer started to occasionally follow the slide down.
As the slide moves back during recoil, it presses the "disconnector" down which in turn presses the "trigger bar" down releasing the sear to re-engage the hammer in the cocked position. If the disconnector slips off of the trigger bar, the trigger bar isn't depressed and the hammer doesn't cock. Apparently, if the left grip panel is even slightly loose, this is enough to cause this problem. I never realized the critical role played by the left grip panel. It holds these parts in proper alignment.
So, lesson learned; always make sure the left grip panel is snug.

Large volume retailers can order editions that are their exclusive package. Some distributors do it too. In poly guns a new color or some combination not yet done in the manufacturers line up might appear. There may still be some that aren't done however, just like Detroit would never allow a green vinyl top on a car painted blue. There are limits for a factory but not the public as we all know.

There might also be some increased profit with a special model as it helps clear the parts backlog for assembly when certain colorways fall out of favor. At one time firearms were all one color, and matching grips were an exclusive. It was the race gun 1911's which popularized mixed slides/frames, controls etc, and the full line up of P938s in the beginning with over twelve models certainly exploited that.
